A handicraft, sometimes more precisely expressed as artisanal handicraft, is any of a wide variety of types of work where useful and decorative objects are made completely by hand or by using only simple tools. It is a traditional main sector of craft, and applies to a wide range of creative and design activities that are related to making things with one’s hands and skill, including work with textiles, mouldable and rigid materials, paper, plant fibers, etc. Usually the term is applied to traditional techniques of creating items (whether for personal use or as products) that are both practical and aesthetic.

Collective terms for handicrafts include artisanry, handcrafting, crafting, and handcraftsmanship. The term arts and crafts is also applied, especially in the United States and mostly to hobbyists’ and children’s output rather than items crafted for daily use, but this distinction is not formal, and the term is easily confused with the Arts and Crafts design movement, which is in fact as practical as it is aesthetic. And at Crafts Boutique you’ll find the finest Hand crafted products, which you’ll never find anywhere else in the City.

Pashmina-the Golden Wrap!

Shawls aren’t just pieces of fabric. They have a rich history dating all the way back to the 14th Century, with Sultan, Moughal, Badshah and European nobles patronizing them.Pashmina is wool produced by the mountain goat (botanic name) of the Himalayas. Pashmina is wool produced by the mountain goat (botanic name) of the Himalayas. The mountain goat lives above 14,500 feet (4,500 meters), where temperatures rarely rise above minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 30 degrees Centigrade) in winter. Because living on high altitude, the goats need to have a warm winter fur, to protect them against the bitter winter cold and to survive the extreme climate.

Only the animals living on high altitude will produce this fine wool. In spring the goats change their winter fur for the lighter summer fur. In spring the wool is collected by brushing it of the rocks and scrubs and to brush the goats. The wool of the underbelly of the goat is used for Pashmina. A goat produces about 90 grams of wool per year. One woven Pashmina shawl requires the wool from three goats. The other shawls are of fine quality wool that is trimmed from body part of sheep/goat and weaving and spinning done by hand and put the threads on loom to weave stole/shawl, the yearn is being dyed in different color’s before we weave the shawl/stole. even bit of beads work and embroidery too is done on it, most of the stoles and shawls are designers with no duplicate copy.

Want to know the difference between Pashmina and Cashmere – Between Cashmere and Pashmina wool, Cashmere is defined as any woll under 19 Microns thick from the Mountain Goat. Most Cashmere Wool is found in the 16-18 Micron range. Pashmina Wool has the finest and thinnest fibres and is only 12-14 Microns thick. Compare this to a human hair which is about 75 Microns thick. Why to choose Pashmina?-because a real Pashmina Shawl differs from other shawls as for its high outstanding quality; they are very smooth, fine woven, and have a soft feeling; it is a shawl for many occasions and all seasons once you wrap yourself in a real Pashmina, you do not want anything else!

Papier Mache:

Papier Mache (Papier Mache is a malleable mixture of paper and glue, or paper, flour, and water, that becomes hard when dry, used to make boxes, trays, or ornaments) is a delicate decorative art painted with pigeon’s feather which shows the artistic of a master craftsman. this art was introduced in Kashmir in the 15th century by a Kashmiri Prince who spent years in prison at Samarkand in Central Asia. The art born in the land of Persia was highly favoured by Moughul emperors of the 15th and 16th century.

Chain Stitch:

Chain Stitch is worked on by men only. As one has to be a professional to make sure the stitches are closely knit to each other. and craftsmen do match their own colour of wool and silk to match the pattern. These Chain Stitches once completed are washed in cold running water. One who has not known what Chain Stitching id, cannot imagine that it has been done by hand. But this is a fact and it is a traditional work of Kashmir.
