Export of beef is already prohibited in India – Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman
Udupi: The Centre’s ambitious ‘Make in India’ concept to promote native products has helped attract more investments, said Union Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. She was speaking at a press meet held at the District BJP office on Friday, June 16.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is committed to providing corruption-free administration and it is already evident through various programmes implemented successfully by the government in the last three years.
The union government led by Narendra Modi decided to start the first certified Gem & Jewellery Training institution in Udupi district of Karnataka State. Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery is being set up in association with the National Institute of Design Ahmadabad. This training centre shall be amongst the series of Training Institutes & Facility Centres set up by GJEPC across India. With IIGJ Udupi, GJEPC forays into Education & Training field in the Southern India for the first time.
Unlike other sectors, the Gem & Jewellery sector has a direct impact on job creation. This is one sector which has different sub-sectors by which the gem & jewellery industry provides maximum jobs to people who come from rural areas and also with non-gem & jewellery background through proper training, she added.
While the media persons questioned about the beef exports issue, Minister Nirmala Seetharaman said that such exports including the cow and calf meat are already prohibited. As per the existing foreign trade policy, export of beef (meat of cows, oxen and calves) is prohibited. Bone in meat, the carcass of buffalo (both male and female) is also prohibited and not permitted to be exported. Only boneless meat of buffalo, male and female meat is permitted to be exported, she said.
The Goods and Services Tax (GST), once implemented, will make Indian exports more competitive and improve export growth. The way the GST discussions have been held and the way in which commodities and exports have been treated, it is going to improve exports. After the strong demand of arecanut farmers, the Union government has raised the import duty on arecanut products which were being imported from Srilanka and it has helped to protect our farmers’ income. The influx of the import of arecanut into the domestic market was causing continuous destabilisation of the commodity prices by causing great distress to the domestic farmers produce. Understanding their plight, we have recommended to the Director-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to hike the existing minimum import price, she added.
Shobha Karandlaje Udupi-Chikkmagaluru MP, Raghupathi Bhat, Lalaji R Mendon former MLA’s, Uday Kumar Shetty, Shymala Kundar State committee members, Mattar Rathnakar Hegde district BJP Chief, Suresh Nayak, Dinakar Babu, Kuthayru Naveen Shetty, Sheela K Shetty, Geethanjali Suvarna, Yashpal Suvarna and others were present.
Later the minister inaugurated the GST Sahayatha Helpdesk started by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Udupi district Unit at Udupi Branch. Sahayatha Helpdesk helps in creating awareness on GST spreading the benefits of GST to small businessmen answering queries, guiding to migration and filing GST returns. The Helpdesk is available to provide free services from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm until 30th September 2017.
Ban on Beef is economically unsustainable as long as we encourage our farmers raise more and more cows to meet dairy demands. The dairy industry is the main driver behind over population of cattle. Millions of farmers sell their cows and calves as soon as they see no commercial purpose. This is what provides a continuous supply of animals to meat industry. If Govt is really serious about beef ban, they need to address the supply side of equation. Otherwise, this is just another political circus.
