Father Gets Death Penalty for Poisoning his Children in Byndoor
The final hearing was held in the district and sessions court here on Thursday, January 3. The Judge Prakash Khandere announced the judgment on January 19.
The accused Shankaranarayana Hebbar (49) had poisoned his family and himself consumed poison at Ganganadu on October 16, 2016.
The children, Ashwin Kumar Hebbar (16) and Aishwarya Hebbar (14) died, while the parents were rushed to the hospital by neighbours. Their mother Mahalakshmi (37) was discharged after treatment and a case was registered in the Byndoor Police Station.
When the Byndoor police started the investigation, they suspected the father and registered cases of murder and attempt to murder against him. During the investigation, the police recovered a 21-page note purportedly written by Shankaranarayana in which he admitted to administering the poison. The note highlighted Shankaranayarana’s relationship with a woman and since that woman had married another man Shankaranayarana was depressed and took the drastic step. When he expressed his intention to die, his wife and children too had said that they didn’t want to live without him.
After the treatment, Shankaranarayana was arrested by the Byndoor Police. Out of 43 witnesses listed, 17 were examined by the court. The accused and his wife were eyewitnesses for the incident. The then Byndoor police circle inspector, Raghav Padil, had filed the charge sheet. District assistant public prosecutor represented the prosecution.
