According to the forest officials, the villagers were complaining about sighting of a leopard in their fields from the past many months. The leopard was attacking the cattle and the villagers lived in fear.

On Wednesday, the forest officials used a street dog as bait to lure the leopard into a cage near the house of Chandraraj of Madaga at Hiriyadka. In the early hours of July 28, the leopard entered the cage. The locals, who were waiting to catch the leopard, informed the forest officials who immediately reached the spot and took the leopard.

The leopard is said to be around 2-3 year-old. It has sustained bruises while trying to escape from the cage. The leopard was later shifted to the Pilikula Nisargadhama Mangaluru.
