Fight Through Ambedkar’s Constitution Instead of Naxal Movement – Sanjeev, Husband of Thombattu Lakshmi

Udupi: The journey from radicalism to mainstream society is a complex and often tumultuous path, as illustrated by the experience of Sanjeev, a former Naxalite who has chosen to advocate for change through the democratic framework established by Dr B R Ambedkar’s Constitution. Sanjeev’s reflections on his past involvement in the Naxal movement and his subsequent decision to embrace constitutional methods underscore a critical transformation in both personal and political ideology.

Sanjeev’s departure from the Naxal movement in 2009 was not merely a personal choice; it was a profound realization of the limitations and consequences of violence as a means of social change. Initially, the Naxal movement appeared to offer a viable solution to systemic injustices. However, through introspection and lived experience, Sanjeev recognized that true progress and justice must be pursued through legal and constitutional avenues. His surrender to the Andhra Pradesh government marked a pivotal moment in his life, allowing him to shed the burdens of his past and seek a future grounded in the principles of democracy and the rule of law.

The significance of Ambedkar’s Constitution cannot be overstated in this context. Dr Ambedkar, a champion of social justice and equality, envisioned a framework that empowers marginalized communities to fight for their rights through peaceful and democratic means. Sanjeev’s advocacy for this approach reflects a broader call for individuals involved in extremist movements to reconsider their strategies and align with constitutional values that promote inclusivity and justice.

Sanjeev’s wife, Thombattu Lakshmi, who has been involved in the Naxal movement since 2006, shares her aspirations for mainstream acceptance. Their desire to have the charges against her removed and to live by the Constitution exemplifies a collective yearning for redemption and reintegration into society. The initiative led by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to facilitate the mainstreaming of former Naxalites is a commendable step towards healing and reconciliation, providing an opportunity for individuals to contribute positively to society rather than remain entrenched in cycles of violence.
