Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI) Director Fr Richard Coelho Inaugurates Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) & Water Fountain at Father Muller Hospital-Thumbay

Mangaluru : Hospitals and all Health Care facilities across the world are continuously searching for better ways to limit the spread of infections and improve their disinfection terminal cleans. Patients and healthcare workers can encounter a variety of infectious diseases that are easily spread throughout the facility from all surfaces including those hard to clean contaminated equipment and high touch surfaces.

The Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), is an integrated place in hospitals and other health care facilities that performs sterilization and other actions on medical devices, equipment and consumables; for subsequent use by health workers in the operating theatre of the hospital and also for other aseptic procedures, e.g. catheterizing, wound stitching and bandaging in a medical, surgical, maternity or paediatric ward.

The operations of a sterile services department usually consist of the cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of reusable medical equipment. Reusable medical equipment, or RME, can consist of any medical equipment from stainless steel surgical instrumentation, to IV pumps and crash carts. RME is separated into three classes: non-critical, semi-critical, and critical, with each class requiring a minimum level of reprocessing. Non-critical items, such as IV poles and pumps, require a minimum of intermediate level disinfection which can be accomplished with most hospital disinfectants.

On Monday, 24 June 2019, a new CSSD and Water Fountain was inaugurated at father Muller Hospital- Thumbay. Prior to the inauguration a short prayer service was conducted by Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho-the Director of Father Muller Charitable Institutions, along with Fr Roshan Crasta-the former Administrator of Father Muller Hospital-Thumbay and current Administrator of Father Muller Homeopathic College and Hospital, Deralakatte, and Fr Sylvester Lobo, the Administrator of Father Muller Hospital-Thumbay. After a prayer song invoking God’s blessings, and a prayer service, the Water Fountain was blessed by Fr Richard Coelho,a nd CSSD was blessed by Fr Roshan Crasta.

During the formal function the welcome address was delivered by Fr Sylvester Lobo, where he also thanked Fr Richard Coelho and Roshan Crasta for being the backbone and supporting pillars of both the projects- CSSD & Water Fountain. Addressing the audience, Fr Roshan Crasta said, “It was my dream to have a new CSSD, since the old CSSD was getting out of date, being in service for the last 12 years, when we took over the hospital. So a new CSSD was a must, for any hospital, and we should be glad that a separate CSSD is set up this hospital. And having a Water Fountain was for three reasons- It gives a face-lift to a institution; it gives a naturalistic look to promote green environment; and It also relieves stress/tension when patients and their kith and kin come to our hospital. Now it is the duty of the staff of the hospital to see that both these two projects are looked after well and kept clean”.

In his presidential address, Fr Richard Coelho said, “Yes, there are expenses when a new project is planned, but when a project is very much needed we can’t stay back thinking of the expenses. I am glad that the old CSSD is replaced by a state-of-the art CSSD, which will go a long way, when this hospital qualifies for the NABH accreditation. Regarding the water fountain it will always give a natural beauty, and also have a soothing and pleasing to the eye. It will also find solace and serenity of mind. Now that we have all the required facilities in this hospital, as staff all of you should treat this hospital like your own home, and keep it neat and tidy. Also go out of your way, and make a difference, which will attract more clients to earn income, which benefits the management and all you dedicate and committed employees. Let Father Muller Hospital-Thumbay be the talk of this area”.

The man behind the construction of the Water Fountain Walter Pinto aka “Grotto Pinto” from Vamanjoor, Mangaluru was recognized and felicitated by Fr Richard Coelho. The vote of thanks and compering of the programme was done by Ms Relisha Sequeira- quality Assistant at the Hospital. Dr Kiran Shetty- Medical Superintendent was also present on the dais during the inaugural function.

And on a final note, never has anyone till now addressed a media person as a “DISTINGUISH GUEST” during vote of thanks, and for that matter calling “Yours Truly” of Team Mangalorean as “Distinguished Guest for gracing and covering the event”, Team Mangaloraen as a token of appreciation has incorporated two photos of compere Ms Relisha Sequeira in the facebook photo album- you deserve it !
