Mangaluru: Hip..Hip..Hooray–it was indeed a time to celebrate for everyone working hard with dedication, commitment, teamwork, enthusiasm at the Fr Muller Medical College Hospital Laboratory (FMMCHL) which has resulted in getting “third Re-accreditation by NABL”, where NABL is the sole accreditation agency for laboratories in India. FMMCHL is accredited since 2012 by National Accreditation Body For Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL). The celebration of this achievement was held on Friday, 5 August 2016 at 3:30 pm in the hospital conference hall.
The occasion began with invoking God’s blessings, followed by welcome address by Dr JP Alva – Dean of Fr Muller Medical College. Dr Shivashankara AR – the quality Manager at FMMCHL through audio-video presentation gave an elaborate “Journey of the Accreditation” stating that, “Accreditation is a Voluntary Process in India. It imparts official credit, authorization and registration of a laboratory and that it has demonstrated its capability, competence and credibility to carry out its specified scope. The process of Accreditation in FMMCHL was initiated way back in 2010 with the training of staff, preparation of quality manual and procedures, and finally applying to NABL in 2012.”
“After the adequacy report on quality manual, there was pre-assessment by the lead assessor, followed by final assessment by a team of assessors. Finally, FMMCHL was accredited on 7th August 2012. All the branches of the lab namely, Clinical Biochemistry, Hematology, Clinical Pathology, Cytology, Histopathology and Microbiology are accredited by NABL. Since then the lab has made a steady progress in terms of quality of test reports, methods of analysis, quality control, lab safety measures, staff training and effective communication with users. Assessors from NABL have appreciated the implementation of quality management system, quality and competence of staff, technical progress, risk management, safety measures and internal audit process. It is noteworthy to mention that most of the lab staff have undergone training in ISO 15189 and NABL 112, the standards for medical testing laboratories”.
While concluding, Dr Shivashankara said, “FMMCHL provides 24 X 7 services. There are well qualified and experienced staff, latest automated equipment and advanced technology. FMMCHL is known for commitment, dedication, courtesy, competence and quality. The first surveillance audit was done in 2013, with which the accreditation was continued till 2014. In 2014, the lab had its second reaccreditation audit by NABL, and now in 2016 FMMCHL is re-accredited for the third time by the NABL till 2018. So, in view of the accreditation cycle being continued, FMMCH is celebrating this occasion today”.
The certificate of accreditation received from NABL was presented to Fr Patrick Rodrigues, Director of FMCI, who in his presidential speech said, “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand. A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work. Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe. My compliments and congratulations to the entire workforce at FMMCHL for the big achievement in receiving the prestigious Re-accreditation for the third time. I appreciate your good work and may you continue the efforts and keep up the good work that you all are entrusted with”.
A message of inspiration and appreciation for the hard work was given by Fr Richard Coelho, Administrator, FMMCH, where he said, “Falling in love is easy, but staying in love is not that easy. Similarly having accreditation is easy, but getting a re-accreditation is not that easy. Buy due to the hard work, team spirit, dedication, commitment and the enthusiasm of lab staff has proved the results. The Lab has demonstrated Capability, Competence and Credibility to carry out its specified scope. This is a great moment to celebrate, and all credit should go to the entire FMMCHL crew. With well-experienced staff, new instruments and equipment, advanced technology and software, and also having “Two Shankara’s” namely Dr Umashankar T, the lab director and Dr Shivashankara AR – the Quality Manager, they have done it again and made the institution proud.”
Finally, the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Umashankar T., Lab Director, and the programme was well compered by Dr Maitreyee and Dr Shailaja, both Assistant professors of Dept. of Biochemistry. The celebration ended with the institutional anthem.
