Fr Gomes Inaugurates Student Council at St Mary’s College

Udupi: The Students’ Council of St Mary’s College, Shirva was inaugurated on Saturday, 23 July 2016. Well Known academician, retired Principal and the parish priest of Immaculate Conception Church (Karnad, Mulki), Fr Francis Xavier Gomes inaugurated the council by lighting the lamp.

In the inaugural address, Fr Gomes underlined the need for commitment in a student’s life. “We should recognise and appreciate achievers and not the toppers alone.” Citing different examples, he inspired the students to be the achievers of tomorrow. “Strong dedication makes people successful. Students should approach their teachers regularly since they also act as their mentors, counsellors or guides.” Congratulating the office bearers and members of the Students’ Council, Fr Gomes reminded the sacredness and significance of the oath that they take and the responsibilities that need to be performed as student leaders. He wished them success in their endeavours as leaders and members of the Students’ Council.

The Correspondent of the college, Fr Stany Tauro in his presidential address admired the helping attitude of the students by financially supporting fellow student Damodar Nayak during his illness. Stressing the need for better citizens, he wished all success to the newly formed student council in its activities during the year.

Principal Prof Rajan V N administered the oath of office to the president of the Students’ Council Nishanth Machado and the president of the council administered the oath to the other members of the council. Scholarships were also issued to deserving students.

Nishanth Machado welcomed the gathering while secretary Nikhil Nonda delivered the vote of thanks. Student Welfare Officer Dr Padmanabhan S introduced the guest. Parish Pastoral Council vice president Wilson D’Souza and the other office bearers of the Students’ Council were present on the stage. Reeshel Fernandes compered the programme.
