Free Health Check-Up Camp Held for Rural Teachers of Dakshina Kannada

Mangalore: A free health check-up camp was organized for teachers working in remote rural schools of Dakshina Kannada at the Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH) Kankanady, starting at 7 a.m. The camp, which catered to 87 dedicated educators, included comprehensive health check-ups and awareness sessions delivered by esteemed medical professionals.

Highlights of the Event

The teachers, who play a pivotal role in shaping the future of rural children, were treated with utmost care and comfort throughout the process. The camp’s meticulous organization, led by Mzs. Bindu and her team, ensured stress-free enrolment and testing for all attendees.

Health Awareness Talks

Prominent experts shared valuable insights during the camp:
1. Dr. Elroy Saldanha, Associate Professor of Surgical Oncology, spoke on *Cancer Awareness and Prevention* , highlighting early detection and lifestyle modifications to reduce risk.
2. Dr. Archana Bhat, Professor and Unit Head of General Medicine, educated attendees on *General Health and Non-Communicable Diseases* , emphasizing the importance of regular health check-ups and healthy habits.
3. Dr. Aruna Yadiyal, Professor and Unit Head of Psychiatry, addressed *Prevention of Psychological Abuse in Children* , offering practical advice for creating supportive learning environments.

Cervical Cancer Awareness

In recognition of January’s global observance of Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, *the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at FMMCH,* in collaboration with the *Indian Cancer Society* , provided *free Pap smear screenings* for women teachers. Screenings were conducted between 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., underscoring the importance of early detection in combating cervical cancer.

Inaugural Ceremony

A symbolic inaugural ceremony was held, presided over by:

• Rev. Fr Ajith B Menezes, Administrator of FMMC/FMCOP/FMCOAHS, who emphasized the critical role of teachers, particularly those serving rural communities, in nation-building. “A nation cannot progress without good teachers,” he remarked.

• Rev. Fr George Jeevan Sequeira, Administrator of FMMCH, highlighted the hospital’s facilities and expressed his admiration for the dedication of rural educators.
• Rev. Fr Praveen Leo Lasrado, Secretary of the Catholic Board of Education and Rector, who initiated the health check-up program, praised the logistical and hospitality efforts of FMMCH in ensuring the comfort and care of the teachers.
