Speaking to Team Mangalorean, Damodar Shetty said, “Food is our common ground a universal experience. With this pretension we are presenting for the First time ‘Kuttanad food festival’, and we got a prodigious response during the first week that we launched it, so we decided to extend it for one more week. During this Fest period of sumptuous food, expressive art, – Come and join us to spur your taste buds with some exhilarating Kerala tradition and culture at this Kuttanad Food Festival. “
Both Damodar and Nithin were kind enough to invite Team Mangalorean to savour some of the Kuttanad delicacies- and we were all “thrilled” to see the different varieties of dishes that we were served by the courteous and friendly restaurant staff, and we were totally “filled” with all the sumptuous food that we consumed. Among the food we tasted, The piece de resistance was a tangy fish curry and I learnt it was due to gamboge or Malabar tamarind, mistaken by most as kokum (Garcinia). The yellowish fruit is de-seeded, rubbed with coconut oil and salt, sun-dried and smoked in kitchen chimneys to acquire its unique taste. It is typical to central Kerala where it is used as a souring agent in fish dishes. I loved it!
