Full-Dome Film Festival to feature Fifteen 2D and 3D films at Pilikula Nov 6-10. The Swami Vivekananda Planetarium at Dr. Shivaram Karanth Pilikula Nisargadhama in Mangaluru where the film shows are scheduled. Films will be screened between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Mangaluru : Those keen on learning more about the Moon and Indian Space Research Organisation’s efforts to study it, can make themselves free to watch a 25-minute 2D film “Moon” during the five-day International Full-Dome Film festival and Planetarium Conference starting on Wednesday at the Pilikula Regional Science Centre here. The “Moon” brought out by Astral Animation from Ireland is among the 15 3D and 2D films to be screened at the 3D Hybrid Planetarium. The full-dome show of the “Moon” will take the audience through the formation of the Moon and its human exploration.
It gives an insight into the the spacecraft sent by ISRO for a study of the Moon and also about future Moon missions. “You will watch the results of Chandrayaan 1 and 2,” said Satish Joshi, Senior Engineer (Projects) of Infovision Technologies, Mumbai, which is, in association with the Science Centre, organising the event. Among other films to be screened include a 45-minute “Secrets of the Mummies” (3D) that provides audiences a window to the fascinating and mysterious world of the Pharaohs; “Wildest Weather in Solar System”, “Dawn of Space Age”, “Dinosaurs at Dusk: the origins of flight”, “Space Next”, “Sea Monsters-a prehistoric adventure”, “Natural Selection” and “Touch the Stars”. “Biography of the Universe”, “Unseen Universe”, “Tales of a Time Traveller”, “Birth of Planet Earth”, “Lifestyles of the stars”, “New Horizons – exploring Pluto and beyond”, “Cosmic Life” and “Mars 1001” are the 2D films to be screened.
Science Centre Director K.V. Rao said that this is the first full-dome film festival at the Pilikula 3D Planetarium, the only 3D hybrid planetarium in the country. Earlier, full-dome film festivals were held in 2D planetariums; there are 17 such facilities across the country. Rao said that some of the films will be screened in the two 2D mobile planetariums that will be stationed near the 3D planetarium. R. Meghana, centre’s Member-Secretary, said that seats may be booked online on Book My Show or by visiting the centre. A special film screening will be held for select students from government schools in the district on Thursday, she said.
The 3D and 2D film shows start at 9 a.m. every day and end at 5 p.m. with every show taking 45 minutes. In between, there would be a couple of conference presentations during the first three days while on Saturday and Sunday, there would be nine shows each. Tickets are priced at Rs 200 for adults (Combo-all) and Rs 100 for children (Combo-all), while the planetarium shows are priced at Rs 100 for adults and Rs 80 for children that are available online — www.bookmyshow.com — and at the Regional Science Centre.
