Gallons of Water Lost since 4 Days near Gerosa High School and opposite St Joseph’s Seminary, Jeppu-Mangaluru-Is MCC Aware of It or Just Ignoring?
Mangaluru: While Mangaluru City Corporation Commissioner, MCC Mayor and other top honchos at MCC are urging citizens of Mangaluru to consume water responsibly and not to waste it unnecessary for not needed purpose-but sadly, on their part, they always turn a blind eye to such issues, and it has been the case for years, and still continue. And here is a water pipe losing gallons and gallons of water 24X7 since 4 days (Saturday-according to a street vendor), but it could be more than four days, but the civic body has not taken any action to fix it as of today. Looking at the amount of water in gallons being lost unnecessary, it seems like no MCC officials nor the area corporator has taken any action to fix this problem until now, even after a resident in that area had complained about it.
While MCC claims that it has to collect payment of water bills in crores – and on the other hand MCC is losing gallons of water due to faulty leakages, like this one. While most of the City is dying of thirst during certain summer months due to low water supply, and here we have water being lost due to human error and negligence. Water leaks are becoming a bigger cause for concern with corporations/municipalities desperately trying to conserve more water while trying to decrease the amount of clean water that is being wasted through burst water pipes.
Old water infrastructure has been a problem for MCC with old metal pipes rusting, loose bolts giving way, and clean water gushing onto the street or into drains, costing a fortune in revenue. So how much water does the city actually lose because of this? A LOT! The City’s creaking water system is leaking thousands of litres every day in regions currently facing usage restrictions as reservoirs run perilously low during hot weather. Many times MCC warns residents to limit their water usage during summer, but don’t bother to fix leaky or faulty pipes that leak out gallons of water. Bah humbug!
Locals say this is indicative of the volume of water being wasted and leaking out of the city’s ageing water infrastructure or human error. If the leaks were fixed there would be no need to conserve water. If you examine some of the MCC water connection pipes you will notice some shocking results- most pipes in the distribution system are in a bad condition. The pipes are either leaking and the dead ends capped with wooden/metal corks increasing the likelihood of water-borne diseases. Presence of heavy metals like iron and lead corroding from the pipes and joints could far exceed limits of safe drinking water. Sadly, MCC doesn’t care about citizens’ health safety.
Not only has the municipal water system been slow to branch out, but it also leaks like cheesecloth. In the established neighbourhoods that enjoy the relative reliability of an MCC hookup, 44 percent of the city’s water supply either seeps out through ageing pipes or gets siphoned away by thieves. Even though this summer we had no shortage of water, we have experienced summers that have brought shortages, even for those served by the city’s plumbing. Everywhere, the steep ascent of demand has caused a run on groundwater. Well, owners drill deeper and deeper, chasing the water table downward as they all keep draining it further.
And on the other hand, we have these faulty/leaky water pipes that lose gallons of water-what a waste? Hope this report will awaken the concerned MCC officials to spring into action, and fix this leaking water pipe, right away, since gallons of water has already been lost in the last four days- so that not a single drop of precious water is lost. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that MCC will spring into action and fix this issue, after reading this report.
GALLONS OF WATER LOST DUE TO NEGLIGENCE OF SECURITY MAN/WORKERS AT THE CONSTRUCTION SITE OF MCC KADRI MARKET
This incident of water overflowing from the water storage tank which occurred couple of days ago shows how negligent and careless these workers, who are employed at the construction site of the upcoming New Mangaluru City Corporation Kadri market. Yours Truly of Team Mangalorean noticed the water overflowing from the water storage tank around 8 am in the morning, which is kept in the compound of PWD Guest Bungalow, located adjacent to the construction site. Noticing the spillage of water, Team Mangalorean quickly entered the site from the front gate but found no one there- and waiting for quite some time, still, there was no sign of the security or any workers.
Coming back on the same road in the evening around 4-5 pm, Team Mangalorean noticed that the water was still overflowing from the storage tank- and this time Yours Truly was lucky to find two migrant workers washing their undies and shirts at the site- and in a loud voice yelled at them for their negligence in not noticing the overflow of water. But my explanation of the situation didn’t strike their brains, since I was talking in butler Hindi, , and theirs was pure Desi Hindi. Anyways, I didn’t waste much of my time with the useless conversation with those guys- instead noticed the electric control box nearby, and played with the switch buttons, and was successful in finding the right switch to turn off the power to the water pump- thereby successful in stopping the water overflow. Thanks to Team Mangalorean??
