Gauri’s name missing from Council’s obit references

Belagavi: The opening day of the winter session of the state legislature here witnessed the traditional obituary references being taken up on Monday, but the name of slain journalist- activist Gauri Lankesh went missing from the obituary list in the Upper House.

The name of Gauri figured in the obituary list of the Assembly with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stating that the killing of the activist was a blow on humanity. He said Gauri had done her best to usher in equality in society. He said her death was a loss to the entire society.

When Food and Civil Supplies Minister U T Khader pointed that Gauri’s name did not figure in the obituary list of the Upper House, Legislative Council Chairman D H Shankaramurthy justified the omission saying many other names had been left out.

In the Assembly, Leader of the Opposition Jagadish Shettar did pay his homage to Gauri but at the same time said the government is yet to nab the culprits who killed rationalist Prof M M Kalburagi.

The Congress has been blaming the BJP for not giving Gauri the respect she deserved.

Both the Houses also paid rich tributes to former chief minister N Dharam Singh, sitting MLAs Qamar-ul-Islam and N Chikkamadu and space scientist U R Rao among others, who passed away recently.
