Ravindranath Shetty, the youngest son of Tejappa Shetty, the founder of the famous “Shetty Lunch Home” in Kundapur in 1958, and in 1973 Ravi along with his brother Mohandas Shetty managed Anupam Restaurant (Usha Hotel) on Balmatta Road, for many years, till Mohandas shifted that business inside Hotel Abhiman near Bunts Hostel Road, Mangaluru in 2001. It is learnt that Mohandas Shetty also died three years ago, on 9 August 2015 at the age of 61, also due to acute renal failure.

Ravindranath Shetty was popularly known as ‘Kane Ravi’ due to his passionate association with Mangalorean Lady Fish Masala Fry. He was also known for his secret recipe of the popular ‘Mangalore Ghee Roast’, an authentic and tradition Kudla dish created by his mother Padmavathi, which was later popularized at all the restaurants owned by his family. Thus “Mangalore Ghee Roast” became a famous Mangalore cuisine in Kudla since then, and is still in high demand at “Shetty Lunch Home/Usha Hotel near Don Bosco Hall-Mangaluru managed by Late Mohandas Shetty’s daughter ; and also at Anupam Restaurant- Manipal, which is managed by Bharath Shetty, son of late Mohandas Shetty.

Sources reveal that during those days, young Ravi was given the charge of rushing to the market to buy fresh fish. Hence his habit of visiting the market every morning and lifting the entire day’s catch of Kane (ladyfish) earned him the nickname ’Kane Ravi’. After Anupam Restaurant closed on Balmatta Road in 1997, Ravi moved to Gulf where he operated a shipping business and returned back to Mangaluru after eight years- and later opened a restaurant named ‘Coast to Coast’, in Bengaluru with the same popular dishes which were served at their restaurants in Mangaluru. The original Shetty Lunch Home at Kundapur and at Usha Hotel, Mangaluru are presently being run by Ravi’s relatives.
