Girl Commits Suicide After Being Teased for ‘Incomplete Hair Straightening Treatment’

Neha Gangamma, a first-year BBA student from St Joseph’s College in Mysuru has become the latest victim to curl shaming. The college student committed suicide after being teased by friends and classmates for her half straightened hair. Her family who lives in Kodagu’s Kottigeri region believes she was depressed due to hair fall caused by an incomplete hair straightening treatment that made her take the extreme step. Neha had gone to a beauty parlour in Mysuru to straighten her curly hair but did not have enough money, hence was advised to straighten just two sides. Her hair did not end up looking the way she wanted and was made fun of, for the same.

Sources reveal that Neha had curly hair so she went to a beauty parlour in Mysuru for hair straightening. She was told the straightening would cost her Rs 7,000. She had about Rs 3,500 with her. Instead of advising her to come back for complete treatment, they straightened two sides and left the back portion of her hair un-straightened and charged her Rs 3,500. At the college other students teased her and she was upset over it. Neha returned home from college and told her parents that she did not want to go back. However, her parents convinced her as they had already paid the college and hostel fees. Reportedly, Neha urged her parents to not send her back to the hostel, however they insisted that she complete her course. After being persuaded she left for her hostel only to return after a week saying she did not want to go back.

The parents still convinced her and sent her back. She suffered from severe hair fall, it is learnt. She came back home for a week again and tried to convince her parents through her uncles, but they sent her back. She requested her parents to take her to Dharmastala where she could shave her head and say that it is an ‘harake’. Neha said she would rejoin college the next year. She had called her father on August 21, after reaching Ilvala from Madikeri and said that she would reach hostel in the next half an hour. She made the last call from Titimati to the beautician. On Saturday her body was found near a river. As per Ponnampet police, the body was retrieved near a stream near Lakshman Theerta. Her father G Pemmaiah has filed a complaint.

When her father made a routine call to her on August 28, her phone was switched off. As he couldn’t reach her the whole day, the next day he went to the PG and checked the CCTV footage. It showed her leaving the PG at 9:55 am with a bag as if she were going to college. Her father then went to Jayalakshmipuram Police station in Mysuru and filed a missing complaint.

Neha committed suicide not because she was teased by her classmates for her partial hair styling. She committed suicide because her hairs started falling after the treatment. With any styling like straightening the cream, chemical should be applied two inches away from the scalp. But that beauty parlour person applied all the way through the scalp which led to hair loss. The beauty parlour should be sealed and that the person should be punished. It’s the fault of the beauty parlour. In India, anyone is opening a beauty parlour without having any degree or certificate. They only want their money… Read more »
