Girls Should Learn Karate to Protect them from Perverts – CM during IKC Inauguration

Mangaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated the ‘Indian Karate Championship 2017’, at the Nehru Maidan here on November 4.

The programme began with an invocation followed by the National Anthem. Karate Champion Mayor Kavitha Sanil welcomed the gathering.

The programme was inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah by lighting the traditional lamp along with District Minister In-charge B Ramanath Rai and other dignitaries on the dais.

Addressing the gathering CM Siddaramaiah said, “I do not know much about Karate but I have watched the movie “Enter the Dragon” in which Bruce Lee had performed martial arts.”

CM Siddaramaiah further said, “From the past one month Mayor Kavitha Sanil was insisting me to attend the National Karate Championship event in Mangaluru. Today I am supposed to attend the Mastakabhisheka in Shravananbelagola. I know Mayor Kavitha herself is a Karate Champion with a black belt, she has also received the Rajyotsava award in 2004. Today Kavitha has taken special interest to organize the National-level Karate Championship. I would like to congratulate her and Sadananda Shetty who always a supporter of sports.”

CM Siddaramaiah also said, “Karate is a martial art and girls should learn Karate.  If girls learn Karate they will develop the capacity for self-defence. We see women and girls being targets of sexual harassment because they do not know how to defend themselves. If every school promotes Martial arts and girls learn Karate they can protect themselves from Perverts. Karate helps to develop self-confidence and self-esteem in girls. We see Kavitha facing every situation boldly since she is a Karate Champion. All the girls should be like Kavitha and learn Karate.”

CM Siddaramaiah unveiled the trophies on the occasion. The drawing by Shabari Ganiga of CM Siddaramaiah was presented to him on the occasion. District Minister In-charge Ramanath Rai, former minister  Abhaychandra Jain, MLAs Moideen Bava and Shakuntala Shetty, founder president of Indian Karate and chairman of Shree Devi Education Trust Sadananda Shetty, deputy Mayor Rajaneesh, Sashidhar Hegde, grand Master Narasimha, District Youth Congress President Mithun Rai and others were also present.
