Mangaluru: Electricity generated through coal plants is becoming expensive by every passing day. Power cuts and increasing dependence on DG sets is causing a lot of damage to the environment. The demand supply gap for electricity is increasing in the country which makes it very important for people to start thinking of other ways of realizing their energy needs. Keeping this in mind Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India had promoted off-grid solar PV systems, and many people in the country have started feeling the need of installing solar PV system for their home, apartment/commercial complex, educational institutions, or small office use, and with this article we would try to provide some information which can be a good starting point and bring awareness among the people to go in for a roof-top Solar PV system project.

What is a Solar PV (PhotoVoltaic) cell and module? Solar PV cell is the basic building block of a PV system. It consists of semiconductor material that absorbs sunlight to generate electricity through a phenomenon called “photoVoltaic effect ”. Sunlight of a certain wavelength can effectively generate electricity. A basic PV cell produces a very small amount of electricity and multiple of them are connected together to form a Solar PV module that can generate 10 W to 300 W output. If more electricity is required, them multiple such PV modules have to be installed in an array.

Multiple kinds of materials are used to create a solar cell and the efficiency of solar cell depends on the same. The efficiency of a solar cell is defined as its capability to convert a certain amount of sunlight into electricity. Solar cells available in the market are of various efficiency: 4%, 8%, 12%, 14% and 16%. The size of a Solar PV module required will depend on output and efficiency. And in Mangaluru, SunStar Solar Solutions have taken the initiative in promoting Solar Rooftop PhotoVoltaic Power Plant in Apartment/Commercial Complexes, Educational Institutions, homes etc, with a motto to create a greener and eco-friendly atmosphere. And a couple of days ago, a “Solar Rooftop Photovoltaic Power Plant ” was installed at Mount Carmel Central school-Mary Hill, Mangaluru by SunStar Solar solutions.

With a mission, SunStar Soar Solutions is committed to enabling solar everywhere. They bring the power of the sun to the people in the most efficient and cost effective way possible. They aim to create a greener and eco-friendly environment. The Solar Rooftop Photovoltaic Power Plant was happily inaugurated by Sr. Pearl Anne A.C, the former Principal of Apostolic Carmel School, Bandra, Mumbai. The Principal Sr. Melissa A C on this occasion expressed her joy with these words – “We have fulfilled our long cherished dream of our initiation towards clean and green energy – one of the 10 projects of the Decennial Year Celebration of our school. The installation of solar rooftop photovoltaic power plant in our school on the building roof will reduce our electricity bills. This substantially reduces dependence on conventional energy sources, thus mitigating carbon emissions and making a significant shift towards sustainable energy use. With this, our Institution recognized for our contribution to Nature and the Society towards clean and green energy”.

Speaking on the occasion, Rudolph Menezes, Founder, Sunstar Solar Solutions, Mangaluru said, “We are delighted to make a contribution towards realization of our commitment towards clean and green energy through solar power generation at Mount Carmel Central School. With the installation of Solar Rooftop plant, the institution is saving Carbon dioxide emission credits equivalent to 600 metric tonnes and plant 900 teak trees over the life time. Our sincere gratitude to Mount Carmel Central School for all the cooperation and support extended”. SunStar Solar solutions promoted by industry veterans having more than three decades of cumulative experience in the field of Renewable energy, Industrial automation, and factory automation, in the national and international level, have satisfactorily completed the initiation of our project.”
