Good News! Awareness on Pollution bring Fireworks Sales Down
Mangaluru: While it has been ‘Bad News’ for fireworks dealers where their sales has plummeted by 30% this Diwali season, but it has been “Good News” for environmentalists, pet owners, Animal Lovers activists, Board, members of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, and other like-minded citizens, since there has been less air pollution, noise pollution, and that animals are free from the trauma caused due to the loud noises of firecrackers. It was not only the ban on Chinese firecrackers but several factors like growing environmental awareness, rising cost of living, growing tendency amid people to save their hard earned money rather than spoiling them on burning crackers and paucity of time etc affected the firecracker business this festive season.
Not just Mangaluru, it is learnt that a survey conducted in 10 cities: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chennai, Dehradun, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Lucknow and Mumbai to gauge the enthusiasm and demand for firecrackers together with impact of ban on Chinese crackers across India in the last 25 days, it was found that the fireworks dealers saw a sharp decline of about 20 per cent year-on-year from past five years and had also almost halved the amount of crackers they used to get in wake of poor sales. Thanks to the negative publicity against firecrackers causing environmental pollution affected the growth of firecracker industry across the country.
Sources reveal that this year in Mangaluru, out of 201 fireworks licence holders, only 111 set up their stalls for business in Mangaluru and in Surathkal. According to a official at Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, there has been not much of air pollution but they are still working on to get the exact results of the sound pollution, due to people using loud firecrackers. Also as per Suma Nayak, a Trustee at Animal care Trust, this year they have not lost or found any cases of stray animals. There has also been no road kills or any cases of animals getting into a trauma due to loud fireworks- so it seems like the awareness campaign of eco-friendly and noise free Diwali has proved some results.
According to fireworks dealers in town, the sale of crackers that make huge noise have been hit very badly, since customers were not buying them. Vendors say there has been 30% cut in sales this year. Team Mangalorean feels proud to be involved in the campaign for a eco-friendly and noise free Festival of Lights.
