Green Tribunal Stays Work on New DC Office Complex at Padil
Mangaluru: The Chennai bench of the National Green Tribunal has placed, until further orders, a stay on felling of trees or conducting any work at the proposed site for a new complex for the deputy commissioner’s office at Padil in the city.
It has directed that a team of top officials from the Bengaluru zone of the Union ministry of environment and forests to inspect the spot and gather information on the number of trees, their nature, category and uniqueness. It has also sought a report if the trees were planted and nursed or they formed a natural growth.
Suma R Nayak, a city-based advocate and animal-care activist, had filed a complaint to the NGT that a new complex was being built by cutting trees in a deemed forest area.
It may be recalled that chief minister Siddaramaiah had laid the foundation for the proposed complex, to come up on a land extending to 5.89 acres at a cost of Rs 41 crore, as recently as Apr 21.
