A medical team is providing professional help for the Gujarat flood relief phase in Dhanera Town of Banaskantha District of Gujarat. This is a joint effort of Godrej Industries- SEEDS – CHD Group.
Dr Edmond Fernandes, Founder and CEO, Center for Health and Development (CHD Group) is leading the health team for this relief missions whereas Yezdani Rahman, Head – Emergency & Preparedness, SEEDS India is overseeing rehabilitation services in the affected schools and villages. Godrej Group of Industries is assisting with regard to logistics and Maniben Mehta Hospital in Dhanera is the local partner along with the Banaskantha Dalit Sangatan providing volunteers.
It is well known and documented that India loses $ 10 billion every year due to natural and man made disasters and all sectors need to converge to build resilience among communities. Gujarat floods have killed more than 218 people and Banaskantha District itself has seen over 61 deaths. This district is the worst affected region in Gujarat and the floods have displaced more than 4.5 lakh people. Over 11,400 people have been rescued by the National and State Disaster Response Forces according to sources and the rescue phase has moved into the relief phase now.
SEEDS and CHD Group have been engaging in a strategic partnership to build resilient communities across the humanitarian sector in different parts of India.
Dr Edmond Fernandes has been focusing on strengthening public health systems in disasters and suggests a likelihood of primary health care getting affected if not paralysed besides spread of water borne and vector borne diseases and hygiene levels getting compromised. SEEDS is a New Delhi based Institution led by Dr. Manu Gupta, Executive Director.
Good job, Dr. Edmond, and also a noble job to get involved with the flood relief programs in Gujerat which is a rich State and well organized State.
Are you doing your own private medical practice now or you are involved with any Medical Institution in Mangalore?
Our best wishes to you, as always.
