Gusty WindS, Heavy Rains for Second Consecutive Day Uproot Trees, Destroy Houses in Udupi
Udupi: Heavy rains and gusty winds that lashed the district for the second consecutive day on Monday night paralysed normal life in many places. The district received an average of 36.33 mm of rain in the last 24 hours.
The rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning uprooted huge trees in several areas. In some places, the electric poles were also uprooted, thus disrupting the power supply. Electrical appliances in several houses were damaged due to the lightning. The compound wall surrounding the SP office collapsed at Bannanje on Monday night.
Rainwater has flooded houses in many areas of the district. Trees at Udyavar, Pithrodi, Kuthpadi have been uprooted, damaging the roofs of nearby houses and shops. Huge trees at Ambalpadi and Kalmadi were also uprooted, blocking the roads. More than 70 electricity poles were damaged. A car was damaged as a tree fell on it at Udyavar. Two houses at Alevoor have been completely damaged due to the trees falling on them.
With rains continuing unabated over the past 24 hours, educational institutions have declared a holiday in Udyavar.
Kaup MLA Lalaji R Mendon and deputy commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis visited Udyavar, Pithrodi area to access the situation. They also assured maximum compensation from the government.
