The constant felling of trees in India has been a problem for a long time, and ‘Vanamahotsava’ is important in creating awareness of this issue. This awareness spread as the Chipko movement rose in popularity as a crusade to save the Mother Earth.

One of the active women organization in the City, the Women of this Inner Wheel Club are indeed Making A Difference, with a Motto-“Empower and Evolve”, who have helped People Live Better Lives, through their various Community Projects, and the Team during the 2017-18 has donated nearly Rs 420,000 towards projects in and around Mangaluru. Inner Wheel Club is one of the largest women’s service voluntary organizations in the world and is active in more than 104 countries, having more than 105,000 members in 3,895 Clubs. Their three key objectives are To Promote True Friendship; To Encourage the Ideals of Personal Service, and To Foster International Understanding. Any woman who shares the three central aims of International Inner Wheel can join the organization. The Club is also dedicated to the pursuit of a society in which women are given equal opportunity and are equally represented in every sector.

And for that matter, the Mangaluru Inner Wheel Club with dedicated, enthusiastic, determined, educated, energetic, hard-working, passionate members have raised their Club to greater heights and helped the community in various means, thereby making a difference in peoples lives and earning the love from the people they cared and served. And for the past few years, this Club has helped in various projects of this DKZP Higher Primary School, in development work and also by providing the needed facilities of the School, which was appreciated by Ms Nirmala Amin, a teacher of the School in her welcome address. Monsoon is there during July and is a special month for trees and tree planting. The main objective of the festival is to inculcate tree consciousness and love of trees among the people, especially children and youth and popularize the planting and tending of trees in farms, villages, schools, municipal and public lands for their aesthetic, economic and protective needs.

Briefing about the purpose of observing ‘Vanamahotsava’, member of Inner Wheel Ms Meera educated the children and encouraging them to plant trees said, ” Vanamahotsava is important in creating awareness of the issues pertaining to the green environment and for every tree fallen, ten tree saplings should be planted to make up for its loss. The festival raises the awareness of trees among people, and highlights the need for planting and tending of trees as one of the best ways to prevent global warming and reduce pollution”

“Tree planting during the festival serves various purposes, such as providing alternative fuel, increasing production of food resources, creating shelter-belts around fields to increase productivity, providing food for cattle, offering shade and decorative landscapes, reducing drought and helping to prevent soil erosion, etc. It helps spread awareness about the harm caused by the cutting down of trees, and it is expected that every citizen of India will plant a sapling in the Vanamahotsava July Month. Planting of trees also serves other purposes like providing alternative fuel options, food for cattle, helps in soil conservation and more than anything offers a natural aesthetic beauty. Planting of trees also helps to avoid soil erosion which may cause floods” added Ms Meera, and the children gave her a loud applause for the awareness education.

Environmentalist Krishnappa Bondel, who was one of the guests of honour also urged the children to save trees and plant more trees when one tree is felled. He also urged them to plant a sapling on their birthdays, and also inform their parents to plant a sapling either on their birthday or their wedding anniversary. He also recited a few slogans pertaining to the green environment and the children repeated after him- and he too got a loud applaud from the children for his inspiration on the green movement. Addressing the children, President of Inner Wheel Club, Ms Neena Shetty also advised the children to plant more trees in their homes or in the surroundings and make this City Green and Clean. She also assured of future help from the Club towards the development work of the school. She also mentioned few kind words of appreciation towards Mangalorean.com for supporting their Club and giving wide publicity, so that the world knows what the active women of this Club are up to!

Following the formal programme, environmentalist Krishnappa K, along with the students and members of Inner wheel club planted a few saplings in the school premises, and after a few selfies and photo-shoots, a memorable “Vanamahotsava” celebration was observed with great enthusiasm by everyone. Other dignitaries on the dais who joined in the celebration were- Ms Asha Nayak-Vice President, Ms Savitha Shetty- Secretary, and Ms Rajini Bhat-Treasurer, all of Inner Wheel Club; Past District Inner Wheel Club Chairman Ms Shameem Kunil, School Development Project President Ms Veena Shetty and Senior School Teacher Ms Kusuma. The vote of thanks was proposed by School teacher-Muralidhar, and Teacher Nirmala Amin compered the programme.

In conclusion, while these active women and school children could think of something that could benefit the Nature, others should follow in their footsteps and think of the environment and plant trees and encourage others too to do so. The state of the environment we are in today-it’s only the trees that can help us come out of this situation. Trees are the lifelines and lungs of Earth. July is Vanamahotsava Month- so there is still time to celebrate by each one of us planting one or two saplings in our neighbourhood.
