HC grants temporary bail to man facing rape charges in Scotland

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has granted interim bail to a man facing extradition proceedings to Scotland to face trial in connection with an attempt to rape case.

“Considering the facts and submissions of the learned counsel for the applicant, I am of the view that the applicant deserves interim bail for 45 days,” said a single judge bench of the high court presided over by Justice Suresh Kumar Kait, after hearing the arguments of both the sides.

The order was passed while the court was hearing a petition filed by Raminder Singh, who was accused of attempt to rape in 2012 when he was in Scotland. He has been in custody here since April 6, 2015.

The court also directed Singh to furnish a personal bond of Rs 1.5 lakh besides telling him to regularly appear on each and every date of hearing to be fixed by the court concerned.

“The petitioner will not try to influence, contact or meet the complainant and prosecution witnesses in any mannera. The petitioner will not leave the country without prior permission of the court and the passport, if any, shall be deposited with the trial court concerned,” the court said.

Opposing the granting of interim bail, advocate Ajay Digpaul, standing counsel, Delhi government, stated that the extradition proceedings were pending against the petitioner and therefore, he should not be granted any relief.
