Heavy Rain Disrupts Normal Life in Udupi District
Udupi: Heavy rains throughout Udupi district in the last two days have disrupted normal life. The district administration is trying its best to deal with the rain-related problems.
The water level in the Seetha, Swarna and Kubja rivers have increased considerably. Incessant rain in the district has resulted in the loss of property and life and considerably affected normal life. There are reports of extensive damage to houses in many parts of the district.
As many as ten houses were damaged and low-lying areas were inundated in parts of Udupi district due to the heavy rain accompanied by strong winds.
Many areas in the district, including the Kedooru, Giliyaru, Padukone Nada, Chitrapadi, Karthattu, Arate, Kannadkudur, Uppinkudrua and other places bore the brunt of the heavy rain. People in many places had to walk in the knee-deep water. Some of the school students were also seen walking to their schools in knee-deep water.
According to the information provided by the Control Room in the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Udupi district received a rainfall of 94.73mm in the last 24 hours, while Udupi, Karkala and Kundapur towns received a rainfall of 54.3mm, 120.3mm and 109.3 mm, respectively.
A massive landslide was reported following heavy rains at the seventh hairpin bend of Agumbe Ghat near Shivamogga border early morning on Thursday. Police have banned vehicles carrying heavy loads while other vehicles including buses are allowed. About 40 meters of the portion of the embankment is damaged in that section.
Udupi Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis has directed the RTO, Police and NH officials to ban movement of buses at night on that stretch till the repair work is done.
With the continuous pouring of rain since the last 3 days, the Kubja River has overflowed and the flood water has flowed into Kamalashile Sri Brahmi Durgaparameshwari Temple and soaked the idol of the Devi.
