Heavy Rains create Flood-like Situation in Parts of Udupi district

Udupi: Many parts of the district have been receiving moderate to heavy rainfall since Friday. On Saturday, July 7, heavy rain accompanied with gusty winds lashed Udupi city and other parts of the district.
Many areas in the city, including the Rajangana Parking area and Mathura Chatra, bore the brunt of the heavy rain. Also, low-lying areas were flooded in Kodavoor, Bannanje, Thekkatte, Pangala, Katapadi, Kaup and other places.
According to the information provided by the Control Room in the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Udupi received a rainfall of 197.6 mm in the last 24 hours until 9:30 am on July 7, while Karkala and Kundapur towns received rainfall of 196.3 mm and 108.5 mm, respectively.
Most of the low-lying areas in the district remained inundated following heavy rains. Major rivers were overflowing, however, they remained below the danger level. Damages in several places were reported in Udupi district due to the heavy rain.
Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat visited the flood-hit areas on July 7 and asked the officials to shift the people from low lying areas near rivers and dams to safer places.
