Heavy Rains in District: Ottinene Reports Second Landslide, Traffic Affected

Kundapur/Udupi: The Udupi district has been receiving heavy rainfall from last two days causing a massive landslide for the second time at Ottinene near Shiroor on Sunday, June 11. The landslide has left hundreds of vehicles stranded on the Mangaluru-Mumbai National Highway 66.

According to sources, there was no loss of life as the vehicular movement was scarce. A large number of vehicles have queued on both sides of the road following the landslide. The hillock which caused the slide was recently cut by IRB Infrastructure Developers Ltd for widening the road. The national highway widening work is under progress in this area and the unscientific planning of the construction was the cause of the landslide.

On Wednesday, June 7 also a massive landslide incident occurred and the district administration has booked a case against IRB Infrastructure Developers Ltd for the unscientific planning of work. Both the lanes of the NH 66 were filled with mud. The company has deployed earth movers to remove the mud from the highway.

Meanwhile, another incident of mudslide has been reported near Maravanthe beach area where the same IRB Infrastructure Developers Ltd are doing the construction work of the National Highway.

In Udupi Heavy rains that lashed on Saturday night have clogged the drainage on NH 66 near Karavali Junction flyover. The stormwater and underground drains in the area have been clogged and the sewage is also overflowing on the road.

The locals allege that the district administration and city municipal council have failed to address the problems. The locals tried calling the Sahayavani Number but no one has been responding to the calls which shows the concern of the district administration and City Municipal Council.

Later locals themselves got into action and made way for the flow of stormwater.
