Heegu Unte! Confusing Street Signs that Do Not Show the Sign Nor Lead You to the Right Place?

Mangaluru: This is the fourth article in our series ‘Heegu Unte’, where Mangalorean.com brings you in retrospect and in perspective, highlighting on civic issues, un-planned and incomplete projects, Traffic mayhem, Irregular roads and Drainage systems, etc in the so-called “SMART CITY”, but unfortunately doesn’t look like we have “SMART PEOPLE” at the helm to prove it. Here is how many of our City’s street signs look like, some of them dilapidated, many worn out, some knocked down, etc.

If you look around the City, there are some streets which don’t even have a street sign, and in many other cases, when there is a street sign, it is either dilapidated or completely worn out. S what good is it to have such kind of street signs which don’t serve the purpose to a commuter who is looking for direction to a place. There are few other street sign boards which are defaced with posters or PG hostel handbills on them- and a few of them are vandalized.

How would a visitor from out of town looking for a street or place benefit when we have these improper street signs, which don’t serve a bit. These dilapidated or worn out street signs will not serve the purpose they are suppose to. But with the Smart City development going on, at few streets you could see brand new street signs erected, along with the old sign board next to it. Seems like you can make a choice, which one to read-the old or the new?

It’s about time that Mangaluru City Corporation or the PWD look into the pathetic condition of these street signs and do the needful so that a visitor to this so-called “Smart City” will not find street signs too confusing, while trying to find a place. MCC should also impose heavy fines on those who paste handbills (like PG Hostel, Pups for sale, Flat for Sale etc) without any hesitation. And without wasting much time the concerned authorities should rectify all these dilapidated street signs for the convenience of the public/visitors.
