Mangaluru: With a Motto- “DARE TO DREAM….LEARN TO EXCEL” Heera International School (HIS) -Shakthinagar, Mangaluru, a Sister concern of City Hospital Charitable Trust launched “LUMIERE 2018- A Global Panorama, an Inter-School Literary and Cultural Competition on 27th November 2018 at the School Premises- with a valedictory function held on 28 November. This Fest is one of the new initiatives of Heera International School started in the year 2016 in order to enable a good rapport with the schools and to encourage and motivate the hidden talents of the students. They believed that this programme will form a base for the students to go and compete in various other events at higher levels- So the School had planned to organize LUMIERE every year to provide a platform for young talents.

Every year this event is held in memory of Late Heera B Shetty, wife of Dr Bhasker Shetty, the president of Nandavan Education Trust/HIS, who passed away in 2010-she had great love towards the children, so this event is a befitting tribute to her on her 8th Death Anniversary. The Inauguration programme on 27th November began with invoking God’s blessings through a prayer song, followed by a welcome dance by the students. The welcome address was delivered by Ms Shailaja Prabhu-Principal of HIS, where she said “Our School is truly the opportunity place for every education seeker. Our school stresses high-quality education with sound moral and spiritual values. Our teachers are dedicated to the student’s welfare, and they are skillful in the handling of social values to shape the life and character of each child. Art, music, and physical education are part of our regular curriculum”.

The programme was inaugurated by lighting the traditional lamp by Chief Guest, Rev Fr Nelson Prakash Dalmeida -Director, Sandesha Foundation for Culture and Education, Mangaluru; Guest of honour-Dr Bhasker Shetty- President, Nandavan Education Trust, Mangaluru; Dr Roshan Shetty- Trustee and Correspondent of HIS; Ms Janet Thomas-Administrator HIS; Ms Shailaja Prabhu- Principal, HIS.and Ms Sunitha D’souza- Vice principal-HIS. In his inaugural address Fr Nelson Dalmeida said, ” We need to guide the young children toward a positive future full of confidence, motivation, creativity, team work, leadership and valuable life principles. Children should be taught to respect their teachers, parents and adults. We need to educate our children and bring them up in the right path, so that they become the future leaders of this great nation. Today’s competition is already filled with colors, and it is where you can all unleash your hidden talents and show your teachers, parents and others present that you also have the capabilities, strength and determination to excel high”

Fr Nelson further said, “In a Competition you need to follow three P’s- Participation, Presentation, and Perseverance. Perseverance is important because if you fail once you need to try again and succeed You have to complete where you started. You are a basket of talents, and do you know who created this basket of talent? God, of course, and then your parents. Winning in a contest is not important, but participating in it is important. You are all winners-don’t lose hope if you fail once-try again, and again, and success will surely come your way. We should all have the will to win but winning is not everything. The whole struggle which you do to win something is also very important. But sometimes losing is also beneficial for us. It is not necessary to win every time your participate. Sometimes you have to go through failures too. So, Participation is more important than just winning. If you will keep on participating in different events then surely one day you will get the result of your hard work. It is not necessary that every time the winner alone gets appreciation and fame for his work. Be bold, courageous, compete with determination and interest, and you will win”.

Following the unveiling of the trophy y the Chief Guest Fr Nelson, and handing over it to Ms Janet, the administrator, the guest of honor Dr Bhaser Shetty in his presidential address said, “At our school the mainstream learning goes hand in hand with social, philosophical and traditional learning, exploring holistic educational avenues for schooling. Based on the concept of integrated learning we focus on integrating indigenous knowledge systems, ecological sensitivity and social connectivity through many innovations. Our school’s educational offerings are enriched by a wide range of sporting and co-curricular activities, as well as community service initiatives, that seamlessly complement our academic programmes. This facilitates children’s learning on all levels – intellectual, physical, social and emotional. Lumiere 2018 is an opportunity to excel in your talents, but remember that participation is more important than winning. Think that you all are winners Best of luck to all the participants in Lumiere 2018 “.

“Our exceptionally talented and dedicated teachers are the building blocks of our school’s excellence. Parents’ trust in all that we do always motivates us to go the extra mile for our children’s success and well-being. We pride ourselves on being a future-ready, happy school, unique in its international character while upholding the Indian ethos. We look to the future with a strong commitment to making a genuine difference in the lives of many young minds.

Addressing the gathering Dr Roshan Shetty said, “This ‘Lumiere’- the Third such event organized by our dedicated staff and teachers will go a long way in the history of our school, and it was organized in memory of my Mother on her 8th Death anniversary, who had great love and affection towards children. She took care of us, all four boys in the family, and her caring, love and encouragement had made all four of us doctors. We are also proud of our father, Dr Bhasker Shetty for his support and encouragement. Parents should play an important role in their children’s lives, and see that they go in the right path. At Heera International School we are driven by the belief that every child is important and the children should be at the heart of every educational endeavour. This makes us direct all our efforts to inspire and enable each child to believe in and practice our motto, ‘Dare to Dream…Learn to Excel’. It does not matter that you win or lose, all that matters is the courage to participate. It is very essential to fight in life rather than just conquering it. You should be ready to face all kinds of challenges and hurdles which come in your way. Best of luck, and let “Heera School” be a shining “Heera” (Diamond) among all other schools”.

Teacher at HIS Ms Rajini proposed the vote of thanks, while Teacher Ms Shubhalaxmi compered the programme. 20 schools participated in various competitions namely-Drawing, Spot Painting, Memory Test, Story Telling, Spell Bee, Bhajans, Fusion Dance, Framing and Narrating the Story, and Team Challenge.

In the Valedictory Function held on 28 November “Sharada Vidyalaya-Mangaluru” were Champs at ‘HIS-Lumiere’- A Global Panorama:

There’s a saying, ” I may win and I may lose, but I will never be defeated. Look in the mirror…that’s your competition! Former Indian President Late Abdul Kalam had said, “Success is when your ‘signature’ changes to ‘Autograph’. So in order to succeed, your desire for success must be greater than your fear of losing. People always think of success. They think of winning. But, they don’t always realize that, winning is not so important than participating. Participating is the main thing, as there is always something to learn . Yes, but if you can also win that is also good, but winning doesn’t teach you something (of course but, it teaches us the joy of winning), winning is something you take over because, you know a lot about it. So, there is nothing to learn by winning but, if we can’t at a time, we have to recognize that weaknesses of ours, and goal to study it so much that next time, no one can win over me. We have to participate and try to win it next time.

The Valedictory of the two-day ‘Lumiere 2018’ was held on 28 November at 2.30 pm, where the winners were presented with the prizes won in various events. And in a knowledge economy, education is the new currency by which nations maintain economic competitiveness and global prosperity. I know the management and staff of Heera International School are trying their best to give the best education and also encouraging students to take up co-curricular activities. The world is changing, and there are many opportunities available”.

“Children should avail all the opportunities that come their way. I am happy to note that Heera is giving an opportunity to the children to unleash their talents. Because of the love and affection shown by Janet towards teachers and students, this school will earn laurels and bring name to the management. And the opportunity given to students to unleash their talents by Heera School is worth mentioning, and students should make use of it in future too. Winning is not important, but participation is. Competition is a master, while participation is also a master. If you lose once, son’t give up- try again, and you’ll succeed” added Ms Baliga.
