Help to Migrant Labourers from St Aloysius College, Harihar
Harihar: Over 250 families of migrant labourers, stranded in Harihar by the lockout, received food and provisions for some days from the management, staff and students of St Aloysius College, Harihar. The college undertook this service as part of their social outreach mission. Our Mission and social concern prompt us to come to the help of the most affected people, viz. the migrant labourers. There are many families of migrants who have been given temporary shelter in tents on the outskirts of Harihar. They cannot go back to their native villages nor can they earn their livelihood in Harihar.
“We cannot do much for them, but as a token of our compassion for them, we provided these migrants with some provisions “It was not easy to reach out to the most needy in the present crisis” said Fr Eric Mathias, S.J., Superior of St Aloysius College, “but with the cooperation of the civic authorities and the financial assistance of our staff and benefactors, we could render this token service to the badly affected migrants”. The teaching and non-teaching staff of the college, residing in Harihar, joined hands under the supervision of Fr Santhosh Fernandes S.J. to make packets of food items and provisions
The packets comprised of 10 kg Rice, Sugar 2kg, Rawa 2kg, Cooking oil 1 kg, Salt 1kg, Chilly powder ½ kg, Tea- powder ½ kg, Nirma washing soap 2, Tooth paste 1, Avalakki 2kg, Jeera 100grm, Sambar powder 250 grm, Turmeric powder 100grm, and Santhoor soap 1- and distributed the same to the families in the presence of the Tahsildar Ramachandrappa . The provisions supplied is expected to sustain the families for about a week. “If necessary”, says Fr Eric Mathias, “this service can be extended further with the help of our benefactors”.
