Orlando, June 24 (IANS) Mexico coach Miguel Herrera revealed their leading striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez could have played at ongoing Copa America football tournament.
Mexico are alos scheduled to compete at the Gold Cup shortly, the 47-year-old opted to omit the forward from the Copa America, along with other high-profile names like Carlos Vela and Andres Guardado.
Mexico were eliminated from the Copa after picking up only two points from Group A, but Herrera has now admitted that there was no clear chain of command to get permission to feature players across both competitions.
“We didn’t know who to talk to in order to ask for Chicharito to play at either the Copa America or the Gold Cup,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday.
“We would love to have had Chicharito with us, but the ‘what might have been’ doesn’t exist.”
Mexico began their Copa campaign with a goalless draw against Bolivia, then split points again with Chile in a 3-3 result, before falling 1-2 to Ecuador, which ended their qualification hopes.
