Hubli sedition case: Karnataka cop suspended for late submission of chargesheet
Hubli: Hubli Rural Police inspector Jackson D’Souza was suspended by higher authorities for delaying the submission of chargesheet in the matter relating to sedition charges against three Kashmiri students for allegedly raising pro-Pakistan slogans.
The police inspector has been suspended for dereliction of duty. He was the investigation officer in the Hubli sedition case.
The three Kashmiri students were granted bail by the court on technical grounds.
Right-wing organisations have blamed the inspector for delaying the submission of the chargesheet in the case.
On February 15, a video of three students — Basit Ashik Sophi, Talib Majid, and Amir Wani — raising pro-Pakistan slogans in their hostel room went viral. They were immediately arrested and sent to Hingala prison in Belgaum.
The investigation officer was given 90 days to file a chargesheet in the case which didn’t happen, a senior police officer from the northern range said.
This is quite usual in India. Between filing of the FIR and the charge-sheet whenever there are powerful people involved behind the case, it normally results in a lot of backdoor dealing between the accused and the police in order to dilute the charge-sheet to an extent the case eventually loses its all strength, resulting in the quashing or exoneration of the accused. A lot of money changes hands in the process. In fact in big cities there are touts who can help you get these things done. Trust me, everyone (I mean EVERY ONE) involved get their cut.
