Humiliation by Police led KSRTC Bus Conductor to Commit Suicide – INTUC
Mangaluru: Various organisations staged a protest in front of the KSRTC bus stand, Bejai here on September 27 demanding justice to the KSRTC bus conductor who jumped into the Kumaradhara river at Kadaba.
Addressing the protestors president of AITU Praveen Kumar said that the bus conductor Devadas Shetty was an honest man, he was unable to bear the humiliation and insult by the police and the woman passenger. Before jumping into the river he had written a death note on the log sheet. Whoever is the cause for the suicide of the conductor should be punished. He also said that there are rumours that the conductor was stripped in front of the woman passenger in the Kadaba police station.
Addressing the protestors member of INTUC, Manohar Shetty said, “So far the body of Devadas Shetty has not been traced. We have information that the conductor was taken to the Kadaba police station and stripped in front of the woman passenger. The case should be reinvestigated and the accused should be severely punished.
Member of INTUC Sashiraj Ambat said that the bus conductor Devadas Shetty had received the state-level award thrice for his impeccable service. It is sad that an honest and award winning person who has worked with integrity for his 27 years has committed suicide. During the investigation, The driver of the bus was kept outside and Devadas was stripped in front of the woman.
Devadas unable to bear the humiliation and insult jumped into the Kumaradhara river. The case should be reinvestigated and the culprits should be punished.
Addressing the protesters Sunil Kumar Bajal said, “The KSRTC bus conductor Devadas was a very honest person, he had received three state-level awards for his honesty. But the sad part is the humiliation he had to face from the police and the woman passenger. People think that government job is relaxing but in reality, the government employees are always under pressure. In such a situation Devadas had worked with integrity and won the state-level awards three times.”
Sunil further said, “There is a law which states, any government employee while on duty should not be assaulted if there are any issues they should be addressed after his/her duty. But in the Kadaba police station while Devadas was on duty the police stripped him in front of the woman passenger who had harassed Devadas in regard to the money. Honest Devadas being disturbed by the act of humiliation by the police later wrote a death note on his log sheet and jumped to the Kumaradhara river. It is not a suicide but the murder of an honest man. We are not blaming the entire police department here, because of one police constable, an honest man was forced to commit suicide. The government should take this case seriously and a thorough investigation should be done. Devadas was the only breadwinner of the family, his family should get a minimum of Rs 10 lakh compensation. If justice will not be done, we will intensify our protest in the coming days,” warned Sunil.
