Hunger strike against sand mining issues turns tense
Udupi: The hunger strike launched by Karnataka Karmika Vedike demanding the framing of guidelines allowing sand mining in the district turned tense as three of its activists reportedly went ill. The protest was organised in front of the Clock Tower Udupi here on February 9.
A person on hunger strike is said to have been rushed to a private hospital but after signs of recovery was later shifted to the government hospital said police sources. Activists set car tyres on fire, but after the intervention of Circle Police Inspector and Sub-Inspector Udupi town police station, the protestors dispersed. ADC Anuradha KAS also intervened and tried to pacify the protestors.
The daily wage workers, lorry drivers who have been facing problems due to the ban on sand mining have demanded to lift the ban and allocate sand blocks in the Non-CRZ zone.
Activists had come prepared, bringing with them petrol cans to set fire to tyres which the police have seized. The situation is under control after additional police force has been deployed.
