Husainabba’s Suspicious Death – All six including 3 police sent to Judicial Custody

Udupi: The six people, including three police, who were accused in connection with the suspicious death of cattle trader Husainabba (62) in Perdoor have been sent to judicial custody till June 15, said Laxman Nimbargi, SP Udupi. He was addressing a press meet at the District Police Office Bannanje on Monday, June 4.

Nimbargi said that the Bajrang Dal activists intercepted a vehicle transporting cattle in the wee hours of May 30, in the presence of police. They assaulted Husainabba and handed him over to the police. The police took Husainabba to the police station in the official vehicle. However, by the time they reached the police station, Husainabba was dead.

The police, with the help of Kondadi and others, brought the body back and dropped it about one kilometre away from the police station. Later, the police registered a case of unnatural death.

The police had arrested Suresh Mendon alias Suri (42, a resident of Perdoor) and Prasad Kondadi (30, a resident of Hiriyadka) from Ballari on June 1. The police also arrested Umesh Shetty (28, a resident of Perdoor) and Rathan (22, a resident of Hiriyadka) on June 2.

On Sunday, six persons including inspector Kumar, his jeep driver Gopal and head constable Mohan Kotwal were arrested. The other three are: Chethan Acharya, Shailesh Shetty, Ganesh Acharya activists of Bajrang Dal.

Investigations revealed that SI DN Kumar, Gopal who worked as a driver in Hiriyadka police station and Mohan Kothwal, a head constable, were also involved in covering up the assault on Husainabba which ultimately led to his death.

The SI and the two other police staf have admitted that they did not stop the assault on Husainabba allegedly by the Bajrang Dal activists. Husainabba along with others was reportedly transporting cattle illegally during the wee hours of May 30. Inspector Kumar, his jeep driver Gopal and head constable Mohan Kotwal were produced before the Magistrate on Sunday, June 3 and sent to judicial custody. They were later shifted to Karwar Jail. Three more accused – Chethan Acharya, Shailesh Shetty and Ganesh Acharya – were produced before the district open court on Monday, June 3. The court has sent them to judicial custody until June 15.

The ASP of Karkala Rishikesh Sonavane IPS will be investigating the case. FSL report would further reveal the cause of the death, Nimbargi said. ASP Kumarchandra, ASP Karkala Rishikesh Sonavane we’re also present in the press meet.
