Moodbidri: “The field of engineering has been regarded as one of the flourishing field over the time. Engineers have to take a peek in all activities and pursuit beyond the boundary of their subjects “said, NITK, Surathkal, Director, Dr. Karanam Umamaheshwar Rao.

He was speaking after inaugurating three-day International conference on Laser Deposition: Nanostructure, hetero structure and 2D layers (iCOLD), organized by departments of Electronics & Communication and Mechanical Engineering of Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology, in association with IIT, Medras, supported by Science and Engineering Research Board( SERB), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and Laser Science Service Pvt. Ltd, at Shobhavana campus, Mijar.

He added said, ‘’there will be time when students enter into a profession arena which is divergent from what they studied, and such situations should be a proficient situation to be handled by them with their existing knowledge’’. He opined that “an effective planning is the need of the hour and any project formulated by an engineer should be cost efficient and fruitful.

Alva’s Education Foundation Management Trustee Vivek Alva who presided over the program told the students,” attending conferences, especially the international ones, gives you the chance to listen to different points of view and learn new ideas and trends in respective field. He added said, ‘’our foundation is putting constant effort in the interdisciplinary research areas, which has societal importance. The management is contributing substantially along with funds from various funding agencies’’.

In plenary session on ‘’Coated conductor processing with Excimer laser’’ Germany Coherent Laser System, Burkhard Fechner said, ‘’thin film generation via processing with advanced laser technologies is the enabling and often performance determining manufacturing step in many high-tech markets and applications. The success formula for any technology is bridging the gap between depositing, structuring or modifying a thin film and achieving industrial processing rate’’.

The three day seminar will witness more than 70 research papers being presented, 23 guest talks, 3 discussions and 4 main speeches from prominent researchers and personalities hailing from CNRS UMR, France, Kumamoto institution- Japan, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad IISR-Pune, CUSAT- Cochin, IISR- Thiruvananthapuram, DIAT- Pune, NIT CALICUT, NITK-Surathkal.

Organizing Committee Chair Dr Richard Pinto, Co- Chair and IIT Madras Physics Dept Professor Dr. M.S.Ramacahndra Rao, AIET Principal Dr Peter Fernandes were present among others.
