ICYM Cordel Celebrates Gandhi Jayanti filling Potholes and Painting Unmarked Humps

Mangaluru: Our city is called as intellectuals city. Dakshina Kannada is known for education, Hospitals and banking and is also a fast-growing city. But sometimes we feel that the condition of roads doesn’t keep up with the name of an intellectual city. Whenever there is heavy rain most of the roads in Mangaluru flood. On any road you drive you can find potholes, the new concrete roads are dug up often to rectify faults overlooked during construction by concerned engineers of this smart city No matter what, every manhole in the city sinks and has to be redone. In some places, it is normal for manholes to overflow during the rains. The unmarked speed breakers in the city have become life breakers of many.

Every year at Nanthur junction, Bendurwell, Kankanady, Bunts hostel, Kaikamba etc we are seeing large craters on the roads. The concerned authorities are least bothered of the safety of the road users.

On October 2, we all celebrated Gandhi Jayanthi but some organizations have dedicated this day to social activities. The ICYM Cordel has set an example by taking the initiative of filling the potholes on the road from Kulshekar Church to Kaikamba. The members of the ICYM Cordel unit under the able guidance of assistant Parish Priest Fr Santhosh D’Souza filled the potholes and marked the speed breakers with paint.

Speaking to mangalorean.com President of ICYM Cordel Vinitha Rego said, “The streetlights in Kulshekar and Kaikamba are not so bright and the drivers or riders are unable to notice the potholes and speed breakers on the road. At Kaikamba the potholes are huge and pose danger to the two-wheeler riders. We thought that the MCC would take up the work and fill the potholes but they have not shown up until now. The humps too are not marked, so we the members of ICYM Cordel have marked the speed breakers with paint to be visible for road users. Today is Gandhi Jayanti and we thought of celebrating it in a different way by filling the potholes and marking the speed breakers to avoid accidents and injury to road users, especially the two-wheeler riders. The expenses for the work was sponsored by Kiran enterprises and Leemashree Bikkarnakatte.”

Vinitha further said, “I would like to thank the Secretary of ICYM Leera Lobo, Rhea Sequeira, Sanil D’Souza, Ajay Pinto, Leroy D’Souza, Aldrin D’Souza, Anisha D’Souza, Vineeth D’Souza, Rahul Sequeira, Navil Vas, Ancita D’Souza and Janet Noronha for assisting us. I also would like to thank Fr Santhosh D’Souza for guiding us accordingly. We the youth should come out and serve the society. If we inculcate the habit of service we can bring changes in the society.”
