‘I’ll See that the Culprits are behind Bars for Defaming My Name on Social Media’- Prathibha Kulai

Mangaluru: The rape of an 8-year-old girl in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh on 26 June has galvanized the entire nation to agitate, bringing together groups that are normally seen as holding antithetical ideologies. Seems like with all the rapes on minors and even adults, India has a poor record of women’s safety. The brutal nature of this crime has provided an additional impetus to the protesters. Recalling the incident, on the evening of 26 June, when the 8-year-old girl was waiting for her family members to take her back home, Irfan, the prime accused, abducted her. He took her to the bus stand area and allegedly raped her in the bushes quite close to the Laxman Darwaja. The accused allegedly lured the girl with laddoos, and later took her to the deserted crime scene. Many protests have taken place to punish the culprit, but action has not been taken yet.

In a bid to condemn the rape of 8-year-old incident, the Women’s Wing Leader of Karnataka Congress and Corporator Prathibha Kulai during a press meet held at Mangalore Press Club said that the Mahila Block Congress Surathkal strongly condemns this heinous crime, and demand that the accused be punished to the maximum. “We cannot sit quiet even after such a heinous crime has rocked the nation. These days atrocities and rapes on women has been increasing. Unlike in Western countries they have strict laws on sexual harassment where they put the culprits behind bars within no time, but in India we lack such laws- and therefore we have more crimes and sexual harassment taking place on Indian women” added Kulai.

She further said “Even after so many protests taking place all over India in connection with this incident, but the government has remained quiet. The central government and shortcomings in law are reasons for recurrence of rape incidents in India. PM Modi probably don’t understand the pain of women since he is not living in a family environment. We need to unite to fight against crimes on girls/women, and such brutality and harassment on women need to be stopped immediately. Rapists and murderers are not fit to be in our society. They need to be caught and put behind bars permanently. We represent every girl/women in India-let’s stand together and stop atrocities against women”.

“Now coming to my personal life where I have been abused and defamed on social media by hate mongers, but until now I had remained quiet, but not anymore. I am going to file a defamation suit against those who spoil my name, using nasty photos and using derogatory comments. Recently BJP had misused my name and picture in one of their publications, for which I have discussed the issue with City police commissioner and since the latter suggested to file a civil case, I agreed to do so through my lawyer. But even now I see people targeting me and defaming my name on social media. Enough is enough-I will see that the persons who are defaming me name are caught in the nearest future and put behind bars” concluded Prathibha Kulai.

Former MCC Mayor Gulzar Banu and Ms Sunitha D’souza- General Secretary of Mahila Block Congress Surathkal were also seated on the dais during the press meet.
