The varieties of trees that were planted were- Jambulu, Jack Fruit, Mango, Nerale, Hebalasu, Punarpuli, Chikku, among many other fruit bearing trees. Addressing the gathering chief guest H R Nayak said, “This is very good initiative taken by the doctors, even though their profession doesn’t deal with plants. Planting trees should be a hobby of everyone irrespective of their profession. Mangaluru which was once filled with greenery is losing its greenery to infrastructure of high rise buildings and apartments. We need to plant trees/plants so that Mangaluru can have a clean and green environment, for a healthy and better living”.
Also speaking on the occasion, Shridhar P, the Range Forest Officer said, “Mangaluru has changed from Green City to Flats City and now to Concrete City. It’s sad to note that decades old trees which gave clean air and oxygen for us are getting chopped down for road widening or construction of buildings and apartments. Everyone should plant a sapling today for a better tomorrow. Planting trees in your neighborhood really is one of the best things you can do for the local environment and for the planet. It’s no secret that trees help the environment, but you may be surprised by all the benefits that planting trees can provide. Besides producing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide and contaminants from the air, trees have many other social, economic, and environmental benefits. Trees are like the lungs of the planet. They breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. Additionally, they provide habitat for birds and other wildlife. Therefore trees are essential to the planet and to humans. My request to doctors is that on each of your prescription slip, at bottom you should have a slogan printed saying-“Plant More Trees for Cleaner & Greener Environment”or any other slogan of your choice, which would bring awareness on tree planting”.
Environmentalist Krishnappa K recited a few slogans pertaining to environment and tree planting, and everyone gathered at the venue repeated after him. Dr Prashanth Marla- Medical Director of A J Hospital and Research Centre, also planted saplings along with his students from A J Medical College, Mangaluru. Dr Sachidananda Rai-President of IMA-Mangaluru in his welcome address, urged the IMA members to start planting trees in their homes or at their clinics/hospitals, thereby make a difference in the community, and make Mangaluru look green and clean. Dr Sudhindra Rao- Secretary of IMA compered and proposed the vote of thanks.
