Immoral Policing during Couple’s Presence in Lodge
Mangaluru: The self-appointed custodians of Indian culture and public morals are at it again.
Word went around that a young couple had checked into a lodge in Deralakatte education township. Members of a fringe outfit, alleging that they belonged to two different faiths, were getting ready to barge into the premises. The police got information about it and immediately arrived there.
It was found that they belonged to the same faith and in fact were close relatives. The female postgraduate had come to meet her relative studying medicine in Kerala, who stayed in the lodge.
The matter got cleared when the couple was called to the station and questioned. After they were convinced that they were related to each other, they were allowed to go.
A member of the outfit who behaved arrogantly with the police was taken into custody but let off with a warning.
A senior functionary at an educational institution, when the subject was discussed with him, raised two relevant points. He said that when anyone is in privacy, nobody had any right to disturb them.
It goes against fundamental rights and human rights. Only if there any law and order situation, it is for the police to take care of it, he opines.
On the other hand, such elements themselves create a law and order situation so that the police would arrive. They should be taken into custody, he said.
He also expressed concern that if such incidents continued to take place here, not many upcountry students would choose Mangaluru as an ideal place to study.
There are already reports that the number of students from other states coming to pursue professional courses here is on a steady decline, according to him.
