Improving Road Infrastructure Around New Mangalore Port: A Crucial Step for Regional Growth, Says MP Captain Brijesh Chowta
Mangalore: In a significant development aimed at resolving long-standing infrastructure challenges in Dakshina Kannada, Member of Parliament Captain Brijesh Chowta recently announced the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) tender updates related to key highway stretches surrounding New Mangalore Port. The New Mangalore Port Road Company Limited (NMPRCL) has invited tenders for Operation and Routine Maintenance, marking a crucial step towards enhancing connectivity to the port.
Captain Chowta, emphasizing the importance of improved road infrastructure in his constituency, has been an ardent advocate for prioritizing the condition of roads leading to New Mangalore Port since his inaugural session in Parliament. He has consistently engaged with relevant officials and the Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, underscoring the pressing need to address the grievous state of the NH66 stretch from BC Road to Surathkal. Among the issues raised were critical concerns surrounding road maintenance, hazardous black spots that pose risks to public safety, and inadequate stormwater drainage, all exacerbated by the density of both local and cargo traffic in the area.
The comprehensive project for which Dr. Chowta announced the NHAI tender is valued at an estimated ₹26.05 crore and spans a total distance of 37.472 kilometers. This project comprises several key stretches, including:
- Surathkal to Nanthoor on NH-66
- BC Road to Padil on NH-73
- Bypass from Nanthoor Junction to Padil
The scope of work outlined in the NHAI tender encompasses a range of essential improvements designed to bolster road integrity and enhance user safety. Key components include:
- Overlaying of 11.084 kilometers (encompassing areas from Surathkal to APMC, Kulur to AJ Hospital, and Nanthoor to Padil).
- Comprehensive cleaning of carriageways and the removal of obstructive vegetation.
- Effective road property management and maintenance measures.
- Engineering works aimed at improving road safety.
- Implementation of incident management protocols.
Captain Chowta commented on the announcement: “This reaffirms our commitment to improving road infrastructure and ensuring the safety of commuters in Dakshina Kannada. With enhanced service roads, pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, and improved connectivity to New Mangalore Port, this project will substantially bolster trade, transportation, and tourism prospects in our region.”
In his remarks, the MP also expressed gratitude to the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari. He acknowledged Minister Gadkari for acting with commendable swiftness, stating, “This endeavor serves as a critical link to fast-track Dakshina Kannada’s growth towards ‘Viksit Bharat,’ as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
In addition to the tender updates, Captain Chowta indicated that the NHAI has also finalized bids for several other crucial infrastructure initiatives along NH-66. The contract for Project development has been awarded to the successful bidder, a joint venture comprising National Infrabuild Private Limited Thirthahalli and National Projects Pvt Ltd.
The approved projects include the construction of service roads at multiple pivotal locations, designed to facilitate smoother and safer vehicular movement. The locations earmarked for construction services include the following:
- Mulky: 500 meters (both sides) from Km 348+660 to Km 349+160
- Padupanambur: 310 meters (both sides) from Km 353+690 to Km 354+000
- Haleyangadi Village: 550 meters (both sides) from Km 354+700 to Km 355+250
- Beeri: 700 meters (both sides) from Km 12+000 to Km 12+700
In a further stride towards enhancing public safety, the announcement also included plans for two Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) to be constructed—one near Mukka (in the vicinity of Srinivas College) and the other at Yakkur (adjacent to Fishery College). The developmental works associated with these infrastructure improvements are scheduled to commence imminently and are anticipated to provide significant enhancements to both pedestrian and vehicular safety across the region.
In conclusion, the proactive measures undertaken by MP Captain Brijesh Chowta represent a significant advancement for the Mangalore region, establishing a roadmap for future growth and development through targeted infrastructure improvements. The focus on enhancing road safety and connectivity around New Mangalore Port is poised to transform the district’s economic landscape, fostering sustainable development and attracting greater trade and tourism opportunities in the years to come.
