Inauguration of NSS Unit at St Aloysius Industrial Training Institute

Mangaluru: National Service Scheme popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Mahatma Gandhi Centenary year 1969 and aimed at developing students’ personality through community service. The objective of National Service is educational and is attained through the service to the community. The symbol for the NSS has been based on the giant Rath Wheel of the world-famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) situated in Odisha, India. It signifies the movement in life across time and space, the symbol thus stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social change. For the benefit of the students and their service to the community, St.Aloysius ITI, Mangaluru took an initiative to commence an NSS unit.

The NSS unit of St.Aloysius ITI, Mangalore for the academic year 2019-20 was inaugurated on 14th December 2019 at college auditorium at 10 A.M. The inauguration began by hoisting NSS flag by Chief guest, Divakar Shetty, H.O.D Dept.of Automobile Engineering, S.N.M. Polytechnic Sunkadakatte with great honour in our premises.

The formal programme commenced by the blessing of the Almighty God with a prayer conducted by Sewing Technology students. Later Vatan Bhandary, NSS coordinator, President escorted the dignitaries to the dais. .Kiran D’Souza, Programme Officer extended a cordial welcome to the dignitaries. Rev. Fr Cyril D Mello SJ, Director of the institution presided over the function. The other dignitaries on the dais were Alwyn Menezes, Vice Principal; Noel Lobo, Training Officer. Roshan D’Souza, the principal gave a brief introduction on National Service Scheme (NSS) wherein 105 NSS volunteers from different trades have registered for their service to the community. The programme was formally inaugurated by lighting the lamp by the dignitaries. NSS pledge was taken by the NSS coordinators and volunteers which was conducted by John D’Souza, Programme Officer. Kiran D’Souza introduced the newly elected NSS leader; Vatan Bhandary as President and Kavitha as Secretary and other office-bearers.

Later NSS Prayer was sung by the NSS volunteers. Divakar Shetty, Chief guest addressing the gathering said “ The main objective of NSS is “Not me but you”, hence NSS volunteer have to be ready for any emergency service. He gave an insight about various activities to be conducted through NSS such as Social Awareness, Orientation on Social and Health issues, Education, Environment, Health, National integration, Plastic collection, campus cleaning, Donating Blood etc. Joining NSS for a certificate is of no use, instead of by being an NSS volunteer how much you have gained and given to the community is more important. By being an NSS volunteer you can learn to be well-disciplined, have time sense, get adjusted with other volunteers, have self-confidence, develop your personality, have the ability to give speeches. He also mentioned by making mistakes, we get experience and by the experience, we can reduce the mistakes. By NSS program we have to give service to the nation.”

In the presidential address, Rev Fr. Cyril D’mello SJ, Director of the institution addressing said “ In this cooperate world or society no one is given free service, everything has to be paid. In the present world, we should not only expect from society but also give back to society, hence NSS volunteers should be active at any time for their service to the community. He said the main objective of St. Aloysius Institutions is “ we prepare men and women for others”, hence an NSS volunteer have to work for the progress of the society and not for any personal gain.”

Vatan Bhandary, President, NSS coordinator delivered the Vote of thanks. The function was compered by NSS volunteer, Reeyon Prathwil D’Souza. The programme concluded by the NSS song sung by all the NSS volunteers.
