‘Incontinence to Continence’, a CME on ‘Update in Urogynaecology’ at FMMC

  • With Theme ‘Incontinence to Continence’, a CME on ‘Update in Urogynaecology’ was held at Father Muller Medical College, on Sunday, 6 May 2018.

Mangaluru: The Dept of Obstetrics and Gynaecology; and Dept of Urology at Father Muller Medical College-Mangaluru held a CME on “Update in Urogynaecology”, with a theme ” Incontinence to Continence” at the FMMC Decennial Auditorium on Sunday, 6 May 2018.

The complaint of involuntary leakage of urine is a common and distressing medical condition severely affecting the Quality Of Life {QOL}. With prevalence ranging from 10 to 34% among Indian women, this condition is usually under-reported or inadequately treated leading to persistence of problems among women. Hence it is important to be aware of the treatment options, short or long term outcome and research in the field of pelvic health aiming at improving the quality of life among women with voiding dysfunction.

And in order to update on the recent trends in the management of Urinary Dysfunction, FMMC had invited eminent specialists to speak during this CME, which would benefit Gynaecologists, Urologists and Postgraduate students. This CME was aimed to update delegates on current issues and clinical practice in this specialty. This would also benefit Nurses and Physiotherapists with an interest in this field, and Improve the overall knowledge of urogynaecology, and also Understand the basis of anatomy and basic science. And be able to comprehensively manage patients with varying urogynaecological conditions

The CME began with invoking God’s blessings through a prayer song by Dr Vimula of Dept of Urology, FMMC, followed by welcome address by Dr Alveera D’souza- Organizing secretary/Senior Resident Dept of Urology-FMMC. The programme was inaugurated by lighting the traditional lamp by the chief guest Dr Sanjay Sinha-Consultant Urologist and Renal Transplant Surgeon at Apollo Hospital, Hyderabad; along with other dignitaries on the dais namely- Fr Richard Coelho-Director, FMCI; Dr Jayaprakash Alva-Dean, FMMC; Dr NagarathnaG- Professor and HOD of OBG; Dr Prashanth Adiga- Asst Prof. Dept of Urology? Organizing Secretary; and Dr Alveera D’souza.

In His inaugural address Chief guest, Dr Sanjay Sinha said, “This is a unique speciality- not like Neurogynaecology nor Nephrogygynaecology, instead just simple Urogynaecology. Presently lots of women suffer from urogynaecology, and CME programmes like these will surely benefit to update the standards of urogynecology in treating the patients better and successfully. Urogynecological problems are seldom life-threatening, but they do have a major impact on the quality of life of affected individuals. Urogynecologists will usually use quality of life improvement as a treatment goal, and there is a major focus on optimising symptoms using conservative measures before embarking on more invasive treatments. I am sure that this CME with various topics delivered by eminent speakers will benefit in improving and updating urogynaecology”.

Fr Richard Coelho and Dr Jayaprakash Alva also spoke on the importance of this CME which would go a long way in upgrading the present standards of Urogynaecology, so that patients would receive better treatment and better results. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Prashanth Adiga, while the formal inaugural function was compered by Dr Yagnya Vishnu Hayagreev and Dr Sowmya, both from Dept of Urology.

During the CME, the topics that were discussed were : “Basics on Female Continence” by Dr Shymala G- Prof and Unit Chief, KMC, Manipal; “Recent Trends in the Management of Overactive Bladder”by Dr Arun Chawla -Prof and HOD Dept of Urology, KMC-Manipal; “Urodynamics-Basics and Interpretation, when are they useful and how do we use them in pelvic organ prolapse” by Dr Sanjay Sinha; :Newer developments in the management of stress urinary incontinence” by Dr Sanjay Sinha; “Adult stem cell therapy {regenerative therapy} in female voiding dysfunction” by Dr Sundari N-Consultant Obstetrician at M S Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, Bengaluru; ” Recognition and Principles of Bladder injury repair” by Dr Nandakishore B-Asst Prof, Dept of Urology, FMMCH; also workshop on bladder repair for PG and senior residents by Dr Prashanth Adiga, Dr Nandakishore and Dr Mahesh Navada {MD in OBG at FMMCH}; and Assessment for Postgraduates by Dr Deepa Kanagal-Prof at Dept of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, FMMCH.
