Incredible Kudla! The Incomplete Irregular Incredible Collector’s Gate Rd
Welcome to Incredible Kudla- the picturesque Coastal and Education Hub, where you can experience Incomplete New Roads, Quite a few Stinking Open Drainage, Sunken Manholes, Irregular Footpaths, Scattered Garbage, Neglected thousands of Stray dogs, Unlicensed Street Vendors/petty shops, Reckless ad Arrogant Bus Drivers etc etc– and now we have yet another “Not Smart” newly constructed road between Collector’s Gate (Near Balmatta Circle) and Horticulture (Bendore) which is posing safety hazards to motorists and pedestrians- moving on this stretch of “Incomplete Irregular Incredible” Road is simply a “NIGHTMARE?”
Mangaluru: Welcome to Incredible Kudla- the picturesque Coastal and Education Hub, where you can experience Incomplete New Roads, Quite a few Stinking Open Drainage, Sunken Manholes, Irregular Footpaths, Scattered Garbage, Neglected thousands of Stray dogs, Unlicensed Street Vendors/petty shops, Reckless ad Arrogant Bus Drivers etc etc– and now we have yet another “Not Smart” newly constructed road between Collector’s Gate (Near Balmatta Circle) and Horticulture (Bendore) which is posing safety hazards to motorists and pedestrians- moving on this stretch of “Incomplete Irregular Incredible” Road is simply a “NIGHTMARE?” Looks like a two-lane road has become one-lane, with the contractors filling the deep open divider with mud lately, after few vehicles had fallen into it.
For a City which has been selected as one of the “Smart City” of India, but it seems like we are lacking “Smart People”, right from MCC Officials, Engineers, Contractors, and other District authorities who are simply wasting tax payers hard earned money on projects, which once completed can’t be use either by the motorists nor citizens. Last time I had written an article on this stretch of Collector’s Gate-Horticulture Road named “A-world’s-crooked-city-road-once-completed” published in our website dated 11 July 2016. Now it seems like even before this road is completed fully, it looks like “A World’s Crooked City Road” already, a construction project undertaken by Munna Constructions.
Imagine continuing on constructing a new road when there a few stay orders from couple of residents and businesses existing on this stretch-that’s dumb? This incomplete road has now Broad-Narrow-Broad-Narrow-Broad, resulting in being a nightmare for motorists and pedestrians. Where is the Mayor? Where is the DC? Where is the Ward Corporator? Where are the PWD and District Administration Authorities? Has anyone done a proper planning while taking up the construction work of this road. This stretch of road is in complete mess, just like few other new roads completed jut recently like the one near Vas Bakery-Bendore going towards Mallikatte; the road near Mangaladevi Temple going towards Pandeshwar, among few others.
Does it make any sense to have a new road broad at couple of places and quite narrow at couple of areas on the stretch. Just look at the pictures, you will know what I am talking about? So what good is it to have a new road which is not uniform throughout the stretch. Just look at the completed new Bendore-Mallikatta Road which was also undertaken by Munna Constructions- the road is broad starting near Vas Bakery, and going further it becomes very narrow near a residence/medical centre-who have a case still pending against the road widening. And as of today, the portion of this road still remains narrow. Indeed a “Incredible Shrinking Road?”.
Even when the construction work was going on, traffic was allowed on this road, which resulted in traffic jams. Also since this road was done in a slow pace many businesses on this stretch were in loss, and also caused lots of inconveniences to motorists, since it is a busy and most used road. It was simply a chaos during the construction work and the traffic police department strictly not enforcing as one-way road , there had been traffic congestion all the time. Did anyone care about it? Definitely NO! Why allow traffic on both ways when one side of the side is closed for road work. Does it make any sense? When we have senseless officials in the administration, that’s what happens. Hard earned tax-payers money wasted on bad planning of roads, foot-paths, drainage etc.
Speaking to Team Mangalorean, Carl Correa, the Partner of Crave Desserts and Bakes located on this road said, ” This road is in pathetic condition. We have no idea when they are going to finish it. With the open deep divider in between the two lanes, many vehicles have already fallen into it. Also there is no proper footpath, thereby putting the life of pedestrians in danger. Since our customers were finding a hard time to cross this road with open divider in the middle, we decided to fill a portion of this it with mud so that the vehicles could cross over. When we asked our ward corporator Naveen D’Souza about the slow progress/stoppage of work , he had promised to re-start the work after Diwali-even though days have passed Diwali, there has been no signs of any work done. But it is really foolish to construct a road when a bunch of businesses/residents have filed stay order in court. In spite of spending so much money on this project, this project is sheer waste of money.”
Another citizen residing at Kulshekar, but frequently uses this road, Selwyn Crasto said, ” As a person using this road everyday, I am shocked that this being on of the main thoroughfares of the city, our corporation has chosen to turn a blind eye at the condition of this road. Are they waiting for an accident and the protest that follows, before they do something about it. Is our MCC ready for “Smart City” tag. I fail to understand how they can leave the road for full use as if it is completed. There are no warning sign, barricades or even proper lighting on the street at night. Thank you Violet, Alfie and Team Mangalorean for the hard work you do to highlight all these civic issues so often.Thank you for your prompt interest and action. Media people like you can make a difference”.
Shirley MS, a resident of Bendore who also frequently walk on this road said, ” I take this road every single day for my daily walk or also do few errands. I feel nervous many a times when speeding buses and other vehicles zoom by, and with no proper footpath, people like me are putting their lives in risk. Does our Mayor or MCC officials care about the safety of the citizens- I don’t think so. I guess they want us to die? Sad to note that we have a useless and careless City administration. Thank you, for highlighting this civic issue for the safety of seniors like me”.
Yes, in Mangaluru lately we have been seeing new roads being constructed-the road widening was proposed as a solution to the traffic congestion in this growing city with lots of traffic and commuters. India’s education hub, Mangaluru has an abundance of charms but its roads and traffic are not among them. The roads are narrow and the network woefully scanty, despite the fast-paced growth and exploding vehicle population in this city. Roads are so wretched that helpless residents can only make light of the misery by creating pothole-counting face-offs and crater-measuring contests. But when they decide to build new roads, they are not planned proper.
In conclusion, through a deadly combination of a lack of expertise, bad planning, as well as rampant corruption. MCC should lay some standards that will set the paradigm for future road works. MCC authorities should inspect and supervise when the road work is going on. If not, it will be business as usual. Roads will continue to be laid and relaid while money will leak out and line the pockets of corrupt politicians and officials. With no other option, the City and road construction officials have now decided to fill the open deep dividers with mud, so that traffic can move on smoothly. But sadly, a four-lane road planned will become a two/one lane road- who knows? Will have to wait and see. In the meantime let’s thank all those people who have put a stay order, thereby killing this project??
