Indian stuck in Mozambique, Beaten to Extort Money, Sushma Swaraj assures help

Mumbai/Udupi: Anand Krishna Singh who used to reside in Mumbai has complained of being assaulted by his employer in Mozambique, South Africa when the day’s collection at his shop went missing from the cash box. Minister for external affairs Sushma Swaraj has intervened after a request from his sister Anitha Suvarna.

Anand’s family had moved from Andheri (E) to Udupi in Karnataka in 1999. According to the tweet made by Anitha Suvarna, Anand’s elder sister to the Indian consulate in Maputo Anand Krishna Singh who is working with Cogeno Comerco Geral de Nacala in South Africa as a shopkeeper. Last Saturday after shutting down the shop had kept the day’s collection in the cash box as usual at the shop. On Monday morning when he looked for the cash to deposit it in the bank there was no money. When he informed the matter to his boss, his boss blamed that my brother Anand himself had stolen the cash. He then took Anand to his office, locked the door and started beating and torturing him from 2:00 to 5.00 pm. Later the employer’s son at gun point took in writing that he himself had stolen the money. Even though he told them that he had not stolen the money they did not listen but continued assaulting him. Parts of his body is now swollen having the blood clot. They assaulted him with an iron rod, hands and even a knife. Indians working there are not even paid their salary on time. Anand had not received his salary for 9 months. They have taken his passport and other documents. He has been told to pay the amount by the 9th of June, if not they have threatened to kill him.

His friends also in Mumbai and Goa had tweeted to Sushma Swaraj and the PMO, apart from circulating the message on social media to help repatriate him.

Sushma Swaraj has re-tweeted the Indian mission’s tweet on Wednesday saying, “High Commission has established contact with Anand (Krishna Singh) and are trying to resolve the issue.” The youth is expected to return to Mumbai soon.
