Interim relief, Toll for KA 20 vehicles suspended till Feb 25
Udupi: With clashes erupting during the protest against the collection of toll on National Highway 66, the police were ordered to arrest the protestors disrupting traffic. The protestors demanded the deputy commissioner’s presence at the spot to address their issues. While the police tried to arrest some of the protesters, others intervened and did not allow the police to take them into their custody.
Meanwhile representing the Deputy Commissioner Udupi Tahsildar and Taluk Magistrate Maheshchandra arrived at the spot. The Tahsildar said that the deputy commissioner is out of station and has conveyed his order of not collecting the toll from KA 20 registered vehicles at Hejamadi and Sastan Toll Plaza’s till February 25.
Once the Tahsildar gave the assurance, the protesters called off the protest and dispersed from the spot.
More than 500 police were deployed to maintain the law and order situation.
Toll Issue: Udupi bandh begins with tight security
Udupi/Kundapur: The Udupi district Bandh called by Toll Virodhi Horata Samiti opposing toll collection at the toll plazas at Hejamadi and Sastan has begun with tight security in the district on Monday, February 13.
In the morning the members of Toll Virodhi Horata Samiti gathered at the Kundapur Bus-stand and stopped the buses starting from Kundapur to Udupi. A few private vehicles and people were seen on roads. Buses were seen on the roads, but only a few auto rickshaws and taxis operated.
As a precautionary measure, the district administration has clamped prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in Udupi taluk, Udupi city municipality and a two-kilometre radius of NH 66, from Thekkatte to Shiroor, from Sunday midnight to Monday midnight.
No holiday has been announced for schools. The local school authorities will decide on the holiday depending on the situation.
