International Athlete Jyothi Shetty Kodavoor Dies in Road Accident
Udupi: International Athlete Jyothi Shetty Kodavoor (50), who was seriously injured in an accident on June 9, died at the Manipal Hospital on June 10 night.
On June 9, Jyothi was going home from Udupi to Kodavoor along with her brother Srinivas Shetty on a motorbike. As they reached near Ambagilu, Srinivas applied sudden brakes due to which Jyothi was thrown to the road and was seriously injured. She was admitted to the Manipal Hospital where she breathed her last on Sunday night without responding to treatment.
Jyothi Shetty, a resident of Kodavoor, had entered the Master (Senior) Athletics in 2011 and since then had won over 100 medals in several senior athletic meets in the state, national and international level.
She had won two medals in Hurdles and Relay in the Asian Master Athletics meet in China in 2017. She had also performed well at the World Master Athletic Championships in Australia in 2016. She was also a medal winner at the Master Athletic meet in Sri Lanka. She was preparing for the World Master Athletic Championships in Spain which is to be held in September 2018.
Joythi was involved in social service and was working as a physical education teacher in Udupi private primary school.
She is survived by husband Uday Kumar Shetty, a daughter and a son.
A case has been registered in the Udupi traffic police station.
