Irregularities in street light management rocks CMC meeting

Udupi: Irregularities in management of street lights rocked CMC meeting held at Sathyamurthy Auditorium here on May 30.

The Councillors demanded the presence of the contractor who has failed in maintaining the street lights. The junior engineer in-charge of the electrical section said that the contractor was not responding to the queries despite several requests. The members demanded for the rolling back of tender awarded to the contractor. CMC President Meenakshi Madhav Bannaje said that as the monsoon is approaching, the contractor will be given a month’s time to attend the complaints and if the issues remain unsolved, the tender awarded will be cancelled.

Councillor Prashanth Bhat said that action should be initiated against the contractor maintaining street lights for not attending the complaints; he also said that the contractor’s irresponsibility was affecting the councillors. CMC President said that action will be initiated against the contractor if he fails to attend the complaints filed by the people on street lights. Councillor Prashanth Amin said that councillors will lose the elections if they fail to fix the street light issue.

Councillor Sashiraj Kunder said that the CMC Commissioner Manjunathayya has terminated four contract workers from service, while the termination of all the contract workers was due. Commissioner said that the administrative matters were not to be discussed in the meeting. Kunder said that during the term of P Yuvaraj as president, the officials were taken to task and held accountable for not performing their duties while under the present regime officials are performing their duties as per their wish. He also said that certain sections in CMC are closed down causing inconvenience to the people.

BJP Councillors said that the dredging in Baje dam would have solved the drinking water issue; CMC Commissioner Manjunathaiah said that the deputy commissioner has temporarily stayed the dredging the river basin following complaints.
