Islamic Law is not contrary to Indian Constitution – AS Puttige

Udupi: Islamic law is not contrary to Indian constitution but it is redemption to address the family issues said Journalist A S Puttige. He was speaking during an interaction programme organized by the Muslim Union, Udupi on Uniform Civil Code at Hotel Durga International, here on November 17.

99 percent of the Indian law is equal to all citizens, but redemption is given to Muslims on marriage, divorce and land. The scope of the redemption is a bit narrow.

When it comes to divorce, the core concern is on women. The nation is witnessing rapes every 16 minutes, assault and atrocities every 4 minutes, but these issues are far away from gaining momentum. Rumours should not prevail over issues. The divorce problems in Muslim community can be solved and Islam has a solution to it. The women who are subjected to triple talaq are only 1% but Muslim women are suffering poverty, rape and begging. Muslim women should lead a dignified life, their economic and social prospects should be strengthened.

The draft copy of Uniform Civil Code should be presented before the people. People should decide on the Uniform Civil Code, he added.

President of Muslim Union Yasin Malpe delivered the keynote address. Hafiz Younas recited the Kuran. Sadiq Udupi delivered the vote of thanks. Hussain Kodibengre compered the programme.
