ITAT-Bengaluru to Hold Circuit Bench Sittings in Mangaluru

Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT)- Bengaluru will hold Circuit Bench Sittings in Mangaluru from January 30, 2017, till February 3, 2017.

Mangaluru: Addressing the media persons during a press meet held at Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry Meeting Hall on Wednesday, 4 January, 2017- Sunil Kumar Yadav- Senior Member of Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT)- Bengaluru said, “The ITAT- Bengaluru branch will hold circuit bench sittings in Mangaluru from January 30 to February 3, 2017, to settle/clear of income tax appeals pending in Mangaluru region. This initiative is aimed at making it convenient for litigants, by having venues for the sittings in Mangaluru. It is noted that nearly 120 appeals are pending from Mangaluru region before the Bengaluru bench.”

He further said, “Presently over one lakh appeals are pending at the national level, a majority of which are at Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, and Bengaluru. It should be noted that nearly 2,000 appeals are filed before the Bengaluru bench against the orders passed by the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals) every year, and nearly 5,000 appeals are still pending before the bench. Of which many of them were filed after 2011, for which the Tribunal is making attempts to settle/clear all these pending appeals. This morning we inspected SDM College of Law-Mangaluru, Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) building-Mangaluru and the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry building to conduct the circuit bench sittings. The exact venue would be decided later. I am grateful to KCCI and ICAI who have assured full support in assisting the Tribunal in having the Circuit bench sittings here”.

“After finalizing the exact locations, the Circuit Bench Sittings will be launched on 30 January 2017 by ITAT President Devadarshan Sood, a former High Court Judge. Last week Circuit Bench sittings were held in Mysuru, and 56 appeals were disposed of. Although at present we have decided our dates for sittings in Mangaluru from 30 Jan -3 Feb, but if we have a good response we will add many more sittings later. We are also planning to have sittings in other major cities in the State, and Dharwad being one of them”, added SK Yadav.

Inturi Rama Rao, Accountant Member of ITAT-Bengaluru was also present on the dais. KCCI President Er Jeevan Saldanha welcomed and thanked the gathering.
