Janaki Brahmavar Bags Vishukumar Award for 2016
Mangaluru: M Janaki Brahmavar, Kannada and Tulu author who is also president of the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, has been chosen to receive the annual Vishukumar award for 2016.
The award has been instituted by Yuvavahini central committee, Mangaluru with the support of Vishukumar Endowment committee.
The award presentation ceremony will be held in the Aroor Laxminarayana Rao auditorium (town hall) at 2-30 pm on July 31, where veteran folklore scholar Bannanje Babu Amin will do the honours.
Vishukumar (1935-1986)
Vishwanath Boloor may not be a very familiar name, but say Vishukumar, most of the hearts in the coastal districts will be touched.
A multifaceted personality, Vishukumar had forayed into several fields – like Kannada and Tulu literature, theatre, cinema, journalism and even politics to some extent.
He had brought out over a dozen novels, which was a great credit for someone so young. If a terminal illness had not snatched away his life at 51, he would have achieved much more.
Some of his well-known novels are ‘Nettara Gaana’, ‘Kaamukaru’, ‘Mathana’, ‘Bhoomi’ and ‘Karma’. He had adapted his own novels like ‘KaravaLi’, ‘Mother’ and ‘AkhanDa BrahmacharigaLu’ as screenplays to be made into movies.
He had also directed the Tulu movie, ‘KoTi Chennaya’. His satirical Kannada play, ‘Donku Baalada Naayakaru’ was a hit with the theatre-goers.
His son Shravan Kumar began his film career as a child actor before getting a firm foothold in stardom..
